The university was founded in 1985 as the New Hampshire Technical Institute, a two-year technical school. In 1987, the school was renamed the New Hampshire Institute of Technology. In 2001, the institute was granted university status by the New Hampshire Legislature and became the University of New Hampshire at Manchester. The university has an enrollment of more than 4,000 students, most of whom are undergraduates.
The university is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. The university's athletic teams compete in the NCAA Division III Northeast-10 Conference. The university's men's ice hockey team competes in the New England Hockey Conference.
