The University of California, Santa Cruz (UC Santa Cruz or UCSC) is a public research university in Santa Cruz, California. It is one of 10 campuses in the University of California system. UC Santa Cruz is known for its liberal arts and sciences curriculum and its commitment to environmentalism. The university was founded in 1965 as a showcase for progressive, cross-disciplinary undergraduate education, innovative teaching methods and contemporary architecture. The university is situated 75 miles (120 km) south of San Francisco in the Ben Lomond Mountain range of the Santa Cruz Mountains above the Monterey Bay. UC Santa Cruz offers bachelor's degrees, master's degrees, and doctoral degrees in more than 160 fields of study. The university is organized into ten colleges: Arts and Humanities, Biological Sciences, Business, Earth and Marine Sciences, Education, Engineering, Environmental Studies, Physical and Biological Sciences, Social Sciences, and the Jack Baskin School of Engineering.

UC Santa Cruz's 10,000 acres (4,000 ha) hilly main campus is adjacent to the Redwood Forest and includes the University Town Center, a cluster of commercial businesses and residential units. The campus is also home to the University of California Observatory, Lick Observatory, and the Santa Cruz Institute for Particle Physics. The university administers two satellite campuses, the Marine Science Campus in Santa Cruz and the UC Santa Cruz Silicon Valley Extension Center in Mountain View.

UC Santa Cruz is classified as a research university with "very high" research activity by the Carnegie Foundation. For 2017–18, U.S. News & World Report ranked UC Santa Cruz 36th among "National Universities" and 63rd among "Global Universities". UC Santa Cruz is a member of the Association of American Universities.
