Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York is a private, non-denominational seminary located in New York City. It is one of the oldest and most prestigious seminaries in the United States. Founded in 1836 by several prominent Protestant ministers, including Baptist minister Charles Hodge and Presbyterian minister John Breckinridge, Union Theological Seminary was intended to provide a more liberal and inclusive alternative to the traditional Calvinist seminaries of the day.

Over the years, Union Theological Seminary has educated some of the most influential thinkers and leaders in American history, including civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., feminist theologian Mary Daly, and social activist and writer William Sloan Coffin. Union Theological Seminary remains committed to its founding mission of preparing men and women for leadership and service in the church and the world. The seminary offers a rigorous academic program, with degrees in divinity, theology, and religious studies. Union Theological Seminary is also home to a number of important research institutes and centers, including the Center for Religion and Race, the Center for the Study of Women and Religion, and the Institute for the Study of Religion.
