Founded in 1592, Trinity College in Dublin is the oldest university in Ireland and one of the seven ancient universities of Britain and Ireland. It is a research university and is a member of the Irish Universities Association, the Russell Group of British and Irish research universities and the Coimbra Group of European universities. The college is surrounded by Dublin and is adjacent to two parks, Phoenix Park and the Botanic Gardens. The campus covers 49 acres and comprises over 100 buildings.

The Library of Trinity College is the largest research library in Ireland and is a legal deposit library for Ireland and the United Kingdom. It has over 6.2 million printed volumes and over 500,000 digital items. The library is a member of the Digital Preservation Coalition and the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions.

The college has produced many notable alumni, including two Nobel laureates, four Fields Medalists, twelve Nobel prize winners, six Prime Ministers of the United Kingdom (including the current Prime Minister, Theresa May), two Presidents of the Republic of Ireland, and the founder of the Guinness brewery.
