Tougaloo College is a private, historically black college in Tougaloo, Mississippi. It was founded in 1869 by the American Missionary Association for the education of freed slaves and their children. The campus is home to the Tougaloo College National Historic Landmark District, which includes 22 buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The college is also a member of the United Negro College Fund.
Tougaloo College offers bachelor's degrees in 28 majors and 20 minors, as well as a master's degree in education. The college is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
The student body at Tougaloo College is approximately 60% female and 40% male. The majority of students are African American, followed by White, Hispanic, Asian, and Native American. The college has a student-to-faculty ratio of 12:1.
Tougaloo College is committed to social justice and has been involved in the civil rights movement since its founding. In 1964, Tougaloo College students joined with other civil rights activists in Mississippi to form the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party. The college was also a key site of the Freedom Summer voter registration drives in 1964. In 1970, Tougaloo College students staged a sit-in at the Jackson, Mississippi City Hall to protest the city's failure to hire more African American police officers.
