Founded in 1885, Springfield College is a private, coeducational college located in Springfield, Massachusetts. The institution confers undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees. Springfield College is known for the teaching of humanics, a philosophy that emphasizes the education of the whole person—in spirit, mind, and body—for leadership in service to others. The school's mascot is the Pride, a lion.

In 1887, the institution officially became known as Springfield College. The college's first president was James Naismith, the inventor of basketball, who was hired to coach physical education.

The physical education program at Springfield College was the first of its kind in the United States. The program was designed to develop physical, mental, and moral fitness in students. The curriculum included games, gymnastics, and self-defense.

In 1892, the college began offering a two-year program leading to a bachelor's degree. The first four-year program was introduced in 1898.

The college was accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges in 1913.

Springfield College has a long history of serving the military. During World War I, the college trained physical education instructors for the Army and Navy. The Navy also used the college as a training ground for its V-12 program.

In the 1940s, the college created a program to prepare students for service in the Armed Forces. The program was later expanded to include the Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC).

The college also has a strong tradition of service to the community. The Springfield College Community Service Center was established in 1966. The center provides services to local non-profit organizations.

The college is home to several national fraternities and sororities. These organizations promote leadership, scholarship, and service.

Springfield College has a student body of approximately 4,000 students. The college offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs.

The college's athletics teams compete in Division III of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The Springfield College Pride sponsors teams in baseball, basketball, cross country, field hockey, football, golf, ice hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.
