Southern Utah University is a public university in Cedar City, Utah. The university is a member of the Utah System of Higher Education. Southern Utah University offers more than 140 undergraduate degrees and 19 graduate programs. The university has an enrollment of more than 10,000 students.
Southern Utah University was founded in 1897 as a branch of the University of Utah. The university was originally known as the Branch Agricultural College of the University of Utah. The college was created to serve the needs of the residents of southern Utah. The college was located in Parowan, Utah. In 1913, the college moved to Cedar City, Utah. In 1923, the college became a four-year institution and was renamed Southern Utah State College. In 1965, the college was renamed Southern Utah University.
The university is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. The university's athletic teams compete in the NCAA Division I Big Sky Conference. The university's mascot is the Thunderbird.
