Southern Connecticut State University is a public university in New Haven, Connecticut. Founded in 1893, it is the second-oldest campus in the Connecticut State University System and the third-oldest public university in the state. It is one of four state universities in Connecticut, and is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.

The university has an enrollment of over 11,000 students, with over 9,000 undergraduate and over 2,000 graduate students. The campus covers over 100 acres (40 ha) in the Westville neighborhood of New Haven. The university offers over 100 undergraduate majors and over 50 graduate programs.

The university is a member of the NCAA Division II and the Northeast-10 Conference. The men's and women's ice hockey teams compete in the Atlantic Hockey Association, and the men's and women's lacrosse teams compete in the Northeast Conference.

The university was founded in 1893 as the New Haven State Normal School to train teachers. The school was renamed the New Haven State Teachers College in 1921, and the Connecticut General Assembly renamed the school Southern Connecticut State College in 1957. The school was granted university status in 1983, and the name was changed to Southern Connecticut State University.

The university has a long history of serving the needs of the people of New Haven and the surrounding communities. The university offers a wide range of programs and services to the community, including the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, the Center for Research on Equity and Diversity, and the Southern Connecticut Writing Project.
