Founded in 1963, Sacred Heart University is a private, coeducational university located in Fairfield, Connecticut. The university offers more than 80 undergraduate and graduate programs through its five colleges: the College of Arts & Sciences, the Jack Welch College of Business, the College of Health Professions, the College of Nursing and the College of Education & Health Sciences. Sacred Heart is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC).

Sacred Heart University was founded by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bridgeport. The university's original campus was located in the city of Bridgeport, on the site of the former St. Vincent's Hospital. The university's charter was approved by the Connecticut General Assembly in 1963. In the following year, the university's first class of students was admitted.

The university's main campus is located in the city of Fairfield, on 200 acres (0.81 km2) of land. The campus is home to five academic buildings, as well as the William H. Pitt Center, a recreation and athletic facility. The university also has a satellite campus in the city of Stamford, which is home to the university's graduate business programs.

Sacred Heart University is governed by a Board of Trustees, which is composed of 18 members, including the university's president, the Most Reverend Frank J. Caggiano, Bishop of Bridgeport. The university's current president is John J. Petillo, who was appointed to the position in 2013.

The university is a member of the Northeast Conference (NEC) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I, and sponsors 19 varsity teams. The university's men's ice hockey team competes in the Atlantic Hockey Association (AHA). The university's men's lacrosse team competes in the Northeast Conference (NEC) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I.

As of the fall semester of 2019, the university had an enrollment of 5,928 undergraduate students and 2,037 graduate students. The university's student-to-faculty ratio is 14-to-1.

Sacred Heart University is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). The university's Jack Welch College of Business is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). The university's College of Education & Health Sciences is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

The university's Jack Welch College of Business offers degrees in accounting, finance, management and marketing. The college is named after Jack Welch, the former Chairman and CEO of General Electric.

The university's College of Health Professions offers degrees in communication sciences and disorders, occupational therapy, physical therapy and physician assistant studies.

The university's College of Nursing offers degrees in nursing, as well as in health care administration and health care management.

The university's College of Education & Health Sciences offers degrees in education, as well as in health sciences. The college's academic departments include Counseling, Educational Psychology and Leadership.
