SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is a public university in Brooklyn, New York. It is the only academic medical center in Brooklyn and one of the largest in the New York metropolitan area. The university is a member of the SUNY system and is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. It is also a research institution and is affiliated with the New York Academy of Medicine.
The university was founded in 1860 as the Long Island College Hospital. It was the first hospital in Brooklyn and the second in New York City. It was chartered as a university in 1950 and renamed SUNY Downstate Medical Center in 2011. The university comprises four schools: the School of Medicine, the School of Public Health, the School of Nursing, and the School of Graduate Studies. It also has a College of Allied Health Professions and a School of Health Professions.
The university's medical program is ranked among the top 100 in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. It is also ranked among the top 50 medical schools for research by the National Institutes of Health. The university's hospital, University Hospital of Brooklyn, is the only Level 1 trauma center in Brooklyn and is ranked among the top 100 hospitals in the nation by U.S. News & World Report.
