Plymouth State University is a public university in Plymouth, New Hampshire. Founded in 1871 as Plymouth Normal School, it became a state teachers' college in 1939 and Plymouth State College in 1963. Plymouth State University was founded as Plymouth Normal School on September 7, 1871, by John G. Mitchell, with the support of Governor James A. Weston. The school was created to train teachers for the growing number of schools in New Hampshire's rural communities. The first class of students, all women, graduated in 1873.
In 1925, the school's name was changed to Plymouth Teachers College. The school began to offer four-year degrees in 1939 and became a state college in 1963. Plymouth State College was renamed Plymouth State University in 2003. The university's main campus is located in Plymouth, New Hampshire, on the former site of Plymouth State College. The campus is home to over 6,000 students, faculty, and staff. The university offers over 100 undergraduate and graduate programs.
Plymouth State University is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. The university is a member of the NCAA Division III and the Eastern College Athletic Conference. The university's athletic teams are known as the Panthers. The university's men's ice hockey team won the NCAA Division III national championship in 1984. The university's women's ice hockey team won the ECAC Division III championship in 2006.
