Nueta Hidatsa Sahnish College (NHSC) is a two-year public institution of higher education and one of five tribal colleges in North Dakota. The college is located on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation, home to the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara (MHA) Nation, also known as the Three Affiliated Tribes.
NHSC was founded in 1974 as Nueta Hidatsa Community College (NHCC) under the Tribally Controlled Community College Assistance Act. The college was created in response to the need for higher education opportunities for the MHA Nation. In its early years, NHCC offered only basic adult education courses.
In the 1980s, NHCC began to offer more traditional college courses and began to award associate degrees. In 1998, the college changed its name to Nueta Hidatsa Sahnish College to reflect its commitment to serving the Sahnish people, who are also part of the MHA Nation.
Today, NHSC offers a variety of academic programs leading to associate degrees, as well as certificate and diploma programs. The college also offers a number of non-credit courses and programs.
NHSC is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the American Indian Higher Education Consortium.
