Northern State University is a public university in Aberdeen, South Dakota. The university is governed by the South Dakota Board of Regents. The university offers more than 60 majors and programs in five colleges: Business and Information Technology, Fine Arts and Humanities, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, and Education. NSU is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. The athletic teams compete in the NCAA Division II and are members of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The university's mascot is the Wolves.

NSU was founded in 1901 as a normal school to prepare teachers for the Dakota Territory. The first classes were held in the basement of the First Presbyterian Church in Aberdeen. In 1907, the school became a four-year institution and was renamed Northern State Teachers College. The school expanded its programs in the 1960s and 1970s and became a university in 1989. NSU now enrolls over 3,000 students from across the United States and more than 20 countries. The university offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as online and distance learning opportunities.
