Founded in 1892, Northern Illinois University is a public research university in DeKalb, Illinois. The university is composed of seven colleges and has a student body of over 23,000. NIU offers over 100 undergraduate and graduate programs and is ranked in the top tier of national universities by U.S. News & World Report. The university is also home to a nationally recognized law school and medical school.

NIU was founded as the Northern Illinois Normal School, a teacher training institution, in 1892. The school became a four-year college in 1899 and awarded its first bachelor's degrees in 1903. The school began offering graduate courses in 1917 and awarded its first doctoral degree in 1930. In 1967, the school was renamed Northern Illinois University.

NIU is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The university is also accredited by numerous professional organizations, including the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, the American Bar Association, and the American Psychological Association.

NIU is home to seven colleges: the College of Business, the College of Education, the College of Engineering and Engineering Technology, the College of Health and Human Sciences, the College of Law, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and the Graduate School.
