Founded in 1828, McKendree University is the oldest college in Illinois and the first chartered college west of the Mississippi River. The university is located just outside of St. Louis, Missouri in the town of Lebanon, Illinois. The university is a private, coeducational, liberal arts institution affiliated with the United Methodist Church. The university offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in a variety of disciplines.
McKendree University was founded in 1828 by Methodist minister Dr. Philip William McKendree. The university was originally located in what is now Old Lebanon, Illinois. In 1830, the university moved to a new location in the town of Lebanon, Illinois. The university was the first chartered college west of the Mississippi River.
The university has a long history of educating students from a variety of backgrounds. The university was one of the first to admit women and students of all races. In 1848, the university became the first college west of the Mississippi River to grant a degree to a woman. In 1864, the university was one of the first to admit an African American student.
The university has a tradition of service to the community. The university was one of the first to establish a school of nursing and a school of medicine. The university also has a long history of educating teachers.
The university is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. The university has an enrollment of approximately 3,000 students. The university offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs.
