The university was founded in 1889 as Mayville Normal School, a two-year teaching college. In 1939, it became Mayville State Teachers College, and in 1965, it was renamed Mayville State College. In 2004, the North Dakota Legislature renamed it Mayville State University. The university has an enrollment of about 1,000 students. The campus is located on the southern edge of Mayville, on a bluff overlooking the Red River Valley. The university offers bachelor's and master's degrees in a variety of disciplines.

Mayville State University was founded in 1889 as Mayville Normal School, a two-year teaching college. The school was created in response to a need for more trained teachers in the region. The Normal School movement was sweeping the nation at that time, and many states were establishing these types of schools. The first class at Mayville Normal School consisted of 24 students. The school's mission was to prepare students for teaching careers in the elementary and secondary schools. In 1939, the name of the school was changed to Mayville State Teachers College. This reflected the changing focus of the institution, as it began to offer more than just two-year teaching degrees. In 1965, the name was again changed, this time to Mayville State College. This reflected the fact that the college was now offering bachelor's degrees in addition to the two-year teaching degrees. In 2004, the North Dakota Legislature renamed the school Mayville State University. This reflected the fact that the school was now offering master's degrees in addition to the bachelor's and two-year degrees.
