Lewis University is a private Catholic university in Romeoville, Illinois. The university was founded in 1932 by the Congregation of the Lewis Brothers as a two-year college. The university is named after brothers Augustus Tolton and Edward Lewis, who were both members of the Congregation. The university offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs.

Augustus Tolton and Edward Lewis were both born in the early 1800s in what is now the state of Illinois. Both men were members of the Congregation of the Lewis Brothers, a Catholic religious order. The Congregation was founded in 1831 by Bishop William Quarter. The order was originally based in Kentucky, but later moved to Illinois.

The brothers were both educated at the University of Notre Dame. Augustus Tolton studied philosophy and Edward Lewis studied theology. After their graduation, the brothers returned to Illinois and began teaching at a school in Quincy.

In 1932, the brothers founded Lewis University as a two-year college. The university was originally located in the town of Lewis, Illinois. The town was named after the brothers.

The university began as a co-educational institution. However, it became a men's only college in 1934. The college became a four-year institution in 1940.

The university moved to its current location in Romeoville in 1957. The university became a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools in 1958.

The university began offering graduate degrees in 1969. The university now offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs.

Lewis University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. The university has an enrollment of approximately 5,000 students.
