La Sierra University was founded in 1922 as La Sierra Academy, a junior college and high school. The academy was founded by the Seventh-day Adventist Church in order to provide higher education to Adventist youth. The academy was renamed La Sierra College in 1925 and began offering four-year degrees in 1927. The college was accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges in 1962. In 1967, the college was renamed La Sierra University.
The university offers a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate programs. Undergraduate programs include business, education, engineering, nursing, and liberal arts. Graduate programs include business, education, nursing, and theology. The university also offers a variety of online programs.
