The university has a long history of serving the Oakland community, dating back to its founding when the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary established a school for girls on the current campus. In the early years, the school focused on the education of girls from immigrant families, many of whom were the first in their families to receive a formal education. The school soon expanded to include a boys' school and a college for women.

In the years following World War II, the school experienced significant growth, due in part to the G.I. Bill which made college education more accessible to veterans. In the 1960s, the school became coeducational and began to offer graduate programs. In the 1970s, the school changed its name to Holy Names College and began to offer programs in nursing and education. In the 1980s, the school began to offer master's degrees and in the 1990s, the school changed its name to Holy Names University.

Today, Holy Names University is a thriving community of students, faculty, and staff who are committed to academic excellence and social justice. The university continues to be a place where students from all backgrounds can come to learn and grow. Holy Names University is an inclusive community that values diversity and is committed to creating a safe and welcoming environment for all.
