Georgetown University is a private research university in Washington, D.C. Founded in 1789 as Georgetown College, the university has grown to comprise nine undergraduate and graduate schools, among which are the School of Foreign Service, School of Business, Medical School, Law School, and a campus in Qatar. Georgetown's main campus is located on a hill above the Potomac River in the Georgetown neighborhood of Northwest Washington.

Georgetown offers degree programs in forty-eight disciplines, enrolling an average of 7,500 undergraduate and 10,000 post-graduate students from more than 130 countries. The university is a member of the Big East Conference. Georgetown is the oldest Catholic and Jesuit-affiliated institution of higher education in the United States.

The origins of Georgetown University can be traced to the establishment of the Maryland colony in 1634. Georgetown was founded in 1789 by John Carroll, a former student of the Jesuits at the College of St. Ignatius Loyola in Maryland, and was named after George Washington, who had been inaugurated as the first U.S. President the previous year. The university has grown steadily since then, and today is organized into nine schools and colleges, each of which offers a different type of degree program.

The School of Foreign Service is the oldest and largest of Georgetown's schools, and is renowned for its programs in international relations and diplomacy. The School of Business offers degrees in business, finance, and economics, while the Medical School trains students to become doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals. The Law School prepares students for careers in law, and the campus in Qatar offers degrees in a variety of disciplines, with a focus on international relations and cultural understanding.

Georgetown University is a highly selective school, with an acceptance rate of only 16 percent for the class of 2022. The university is ranked 14th in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, and its School of Foreign Service is ranked 1st in the world by the same publication. Georgetown is also ranked 3rd in the world for its graduate business programs by the Financial Times.
