Fairmont State University is a public university in Fairmont, West Virginia. It was founded in 1865 as Fairmont Normal School, a teacher-training institution. The school became Fairmont State Teachers College in 1931 and Fairmont State College in 1943. The name was changed to Fairmont State University in 2004. The university enrolls about 4,000 students.
The university offers bachelor's and master's degrees in a variety of disciplines. Programs are offered through the Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business and Economics, Education, and Fine Arts. The university also has an Honors College.
Fairmont State University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. The university's athletic teams compete in the NCAA Division II. The school's mascot is the Fighting Falcon.
