Founded in 1960, Christopher Newport University is a public liberal arts university in Newport News, Virginia. The school was originally established as an extension of the College of William & Mary and became an independent institution in 1962. The university is named after Christopher Newport, a captain of the Virginia Company and one of the founders of the Colony of Virginia.
