Medgar Evers College (MEC) is a public college in New York City. It is part of the City University of New York (CUNY) system. The college is named after civil rights leader Medgar Evers. MEC was founded in 1970 as a response to the 1968 assassination of Evers. The college opened in September 1973 with an inaugural class of 632 students. MEC offers associate's and bachelor's degrees in a variety of subjects. The college has an enrollment of about 4,000 students. The majority of MEC students are black or Hispanic. MEC has a strong focus on serving the needs of its community. The college has a number of programs and initiatives aimed at improving the health and well-being of its students and the surrounding community. MEC is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
