Hunter College of the City University of New York (CUNY) is one of the largest and most comprehensive colleges in the country. Founded in 1870, it is a public institution that is part of the City University of New York system. Hunter College offers more than 170 undergraduate and graduate degree programs to over 23,000 students. The college is divided into five schools: the School of Arts and Sciences, the School of Education, the School of Nursing, the School of Social Work, and the School of Urban Public Health. Hunter College is also home to a number of research institutes and centers, including the Hunter College Center for the Study of the Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights.

Hunter College was founded in 1870 as the Female Normal and High School to train women to become teachers. The school was renamed Hunter College in 1914 after its first president, Thomas Hunter. In 1937, Hunter College became a part of the City University of New York (CUNY) system. In the 1950s and 1960s, Hunter College experienced a period of rapid growth and expansion. Several new buildings were constructed and the college began offering a wider range of degree programs. Today, Hunter College is a large and comprehensive college, offering more than 170 undergraduate and graduate degree programs to over 23,000 students.

The college is divided into five schools: the School of Arts and Sciences, the School of Education, the School of Nursing, the School of Social Work, and the School of Urban Public Health. The School of Arts and Sciences offers programs in the liberal arts and sciences, while the School of Education prepares students for careers in teaching and education administration. The School of Nursing offers programs leading to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN). The School of Social Work offers programs leading to a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) or a Master of Social Work (MSW). The School of Urban Public Health offers programs leading to a Bachelor of Science in Public Health (BSPH) or a Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH).

Hunter College is home to a number of research institutes and centers, including the Hunter College Center for the Study of the Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights. The college also has a strong commitment to service learning and community engagement. Hunter College students have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of service-learning and community-based projects, both on and off campus.
