Brooklyn College is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. The college's athletic teams compete in the NCAA Division III. The college is a member of the Skyline Conference.

Brooklyn College was founded in 1930 as the Brooklyn branch of the City College of New York. The college was originally located in Midwood, Brooklyn. In 1937, the college moved to its current 36-acre (15 ha) campus in the Midwood section of Brooklyn. The campus is adjacent to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and Prospect Park.

The college was originally an all-male institution. In 1955, the college began admitting women. In 1964, the college became a part of the CUNY system.
