Bluefield State College was founded in 1895 as a two-year normal school to train teachers. In 1915, the school became a four-year degree-granting institution and was renamed Bluefield State Teachers College. In 1943, the college began offering graduate courses and was renamed Bluefield State College. In 1955, the college was accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. In 1977, the college became part of the West Virginia Community and Technical College System.

The college offers associate and bachelor's degrees in a variety of fields, including business, education, engineering, and liberal arts. The college also offers a number of certificate programs. The college has an active athletics program and competes in the NCAA Division II. The college is a member of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
