Barnard College is a women's college affiliated with Columbia University, in New York City. Founded in 1889 by Annie Nathan Meyer, it is one of the oldest women's colleges in the United States. It is also one of the few remaining all-women's colleges in the country. Barnard offers bachelor's degrees in arts and sciences.
The college is named after Frederick Barnard, the tenth president of Columbia. He advocated for the admission of women to Columbia, and helped found Barnard College in 1889.
The campus of Barnard College is located in the Morningside Heights neighborhood of Manhattan, on the Upper West Side. It is bordered by 116th Street to the south, 120th Street to the north, Broadway to the east, and Amsterdam Avenue to the west. The college occupies 4.5 acres (1.8 ha) of land.
The campus is home to several academic buildings, including Barnard Hall, Brooks Hall, Sulzberger Tower, and Lehman Hall. The Diana Center, which opened in 2010, houses a cafe, a theater, and a fitness center.
Barnard College is an academically rigorous institution, and its admissions process is highly selective. For the class of 2024, Barnard received 8,937 applications and admitted 1,480, for an acceptance rate of 16.6%.
Barnard students come from all 50 states and more than 70 countries. The college has a diverse student body, with a significant percentage of students of color.
