The Bais Medrash Elyon was founded in 1874 by Rabbi Yitzchok Yaakov Weiss, a student of Rabbi Yisroel Salanter. It was one of the first yeshivas to combine Talmudic study with modern secular subjects, and it quickly became one of the most prestigious and influential institutions in the Lithuanian yeshiva world. Rabbi Weiss was a strong advocate of Jewish education for all, and under his leadership the Bais Medrash Elyon became a leading center for the study of Jewish law and philosophy. The yeshiva attracted students from all over Europe, and its graduates went on to become some of the most respected rabbis and scholars in the world. The Bais Medrash Elyon was closed by the Nazis in 1941, but its legacy continues to this day.
