Aurora University is a private, nonprofit, co-educational liberal arts college located in Aurora, Illinois, United States, 40 miles west of Chicago. Founded in 1893 as Aurora College, it was the first institute of higher learning in the city. Aurora University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. The school offers bachelor's and master's degrees in arts, sciences, business, education, nursing, and social work. Aurora University has a student body of approximately 4,000 students.

The school was founded in 1893 as Aurora College, the first institute of higher learning in the city of Aurora, Illinois. The college was founded by a group of businessmen and civic leaders in the city, who were concerned about the lack of higher education opportunities in the area. The college was originally located in a rented house on the corner of Stolp Avenue and Benton Street. In its early years, the college offered courses in business, education, and the liberal arts. In 1896, the college moved to a new location on the corner of Galena Boulevard and Downer Place. In the early 1900s, the college began to offer courses in nursing and social work. In the 1920s, the college added a number of new buildings to its campus. In the 1930s, the college began to offer master's degrees. In the 1940s, the college added a number of new programs, including a doctoral program in education. In the 1950s, the college added a number of new buildings to its campus, including a library and a student center. In the 1960s, the college added a number of new programs, including a doctoral program in social work. In the 1970s, the college added a number of new buildings to its campus, including a dormitory and a computer center. In the 1980s, the college added a number of new programs, including a doctoral program in business. In the 1990s, the college added a number of new buildings to its campus, including a bookstore and a daycare center. In the 2000s, the college added a number of new programs, including a doctoral program in nursing.
