Arkansas State University (A-State) is a public research university in Jonesboro, Arkansas. It is the flagship campus of the Arkansas State University System and the largest university in northeastern Arkansas. It is a member of the Sun Belt Conference. Founded in 1909 as an agricultural school, A-State now offers more than 200 degree programs. The university also has campuses in Beebe, Mountain Home, and Newport, all in Arkansas.
A-State was founded as the First District Agricultural School in Jonesboro in 1909. The school's mission was to train students in agriculture, horticulture, and related fields. The school became a land-grant college in 1925 and began offering bachelor's degrees in 1930. In 1967, the school was renamed Arkansas State University.
A-State has grown rapidly in recent years. The university's enrollment has increased from just over 5,000 in 2000 to more than 14,000 in 2016.
