The college was established in 1972 as the Northern West Virginia Community College, a branch campus of West Virginia University. In 1977, the college became an independent institution and was renamed West Virginia Northern Community College. Admission Requirements

West Virginia Northern Community College is an accredited two-year institution of higher education located in Wheeling, West Virginia. The College offers a wide variety of academic programs leading to the Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, and Associate in Applied Science degrees, as well as certificates in many technical and occupational areas.

Admission to West Virginia Northern Community College is open to any person who has a high school diploma or its equivalent. Students who wish to enroll in credit courses must complete an application for admission and submit all required transcripts and test scores. Non-credit students are not required to complete an application for admission.

Students who have not yet completed high school may be eligible for admission to the College through the West Virginia Northern Community College Early College program. This program allows eligible students to take college courses while still enrolled in high school.

All students who wish to enroll in credit courses at West Virginia Northern Community College must complete a placement test prior to registration. This test is used to determine which courses the student is eligible to take. Exemptions from the placement test may be granted to students who have satisfactorily completed college-level coursework or who have achieved a minimum score on a nationally recognized college entrance exam.

Students who have been away from college for two or more years may be required to complete a refresher course prior to enrolling in credit courses. This course is designed to help students review the skills and knowledge necessary to be successful in college-level coursework.
