TCAT-Murfreesboro was established in 1966 as the Rutherford County Vocational School. The school was renamed the Middle Tennessee Vocational School in 1968 and became a part of the Tennessee Board of Regents system in 1972. In 1989, the school was renamed the Tennessee Technology Center at Murfreesboro. The name was changed again in 2007 to the Tennessee College of Applied Technology-Murfreesboro.
TCAT-Murfreesboro is accredited by the Commission of the Council on Occupational Education. The college is also approved by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission and is a member of the Association of Community and Technical Colleges.
