Admission Requirements
Southwest Virginia Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education located in Richlands, Virginia. The College serves a nine-county area in southwest Virginia: Buchanan, Dickenson, Lee, Russell, Scott, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington, and Wise counties. The College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award the Associate Degree.
Admission to the College is open to any person who has a high school diploma or its equivalent and who meets the general entrance requirements of the College. All applicants must submit an application for admission and official high school transcripts or GED scores. Applicants who have not taken the ACT or SAT within the last five years must take the COMPASS test for placement into English and math courses. The COMPASS test is offered at the College on a regular basis.
Students who have not met the general entrance requirements may be admitted to the College on a provisional basis. Provisional students are required to complete Developmental Studies courses in English, math, and reading prior to enrolling in credit-bearing courses. Developmental Studies courses do not count towards a degree but are necessary for students to be successful in college-level coursework.
The College has an open admissions policy for most programs. However, some programs have selective admissions requirements. These programs include Allied Health Sciences, Dental Assisting, Emergency Medical Services, Nursing, Radiography, and Respiratory Therapy. For these programs, applicants must meet additional requirements, such as minimum GPA, prerequisite coursework, and/or a successful interview.
The College also offers a number of dual enrollment and early college programs for high school students. These programs allow students to earn college credit while still in high school. For more information about these programs, please contact the College's Admissions Office.
