It is a member of the Kansas Association of Community College Trustees and the American Association of Community Colleges. Seward County Community College was founded in 1965. The college was originally named Seward County Junior College. The first classes were held in the fall of 1966 with an enrollment of 191 students. The college moved to its present location on a 160-acre campus in 1968. In 1972, the college was renamed Seward County Community College. In 1975, the college began offering evening and weekend classes.

The college has seen many changes over the years, but its mission has remained the same: to provide quality education and training that prepare students for successful careers and citizenship.
