Middlesex County College was founded in 1964 as Middlesex County Vocational and Technical Institute. The college was established to provide vocational and technical education to the residents of Middlesex County. The college began offering associate degrees in 1967. In 1969, the college was renamed Middlesex County College. The college moved to its current location in Edison in 1971.

The college has experienced significant growth in recent years. In Fall 2016, the college enrolled over 14,000 students. The college offers a variety of academic programs and services to meet the needs of its diverse student body. The college also has a strong commitment to community engagement and economic development.
