Founded in 1949, Lawson State was the first community college in Alabama. The college was originally named the Birmingham Industrial School and was located in the downtown area. In 1957, the name was changed to Birmingham Technical Institute, and the focus shifted to offering technical and vocational education. In 1968, the school became part of the Alabama Community College System and was renamed Lawson State Community College.

In addition to its two campuses in Birmingham, Lawson State operates a satellite campus in Fairfield, Alabama. The college also offers online and distance learning opportunities.
