J.F. Drake State Community and Technical College is a public, two-year institution of higher education located in Huntsville, Alabama, United States. It is part of the Alabama Community College System. Established in 1961, the college serves the Huntsville-Decatur metropolitan area and surrounding counties. The college offers over 50 academic programs leading to the Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, and Associate in Applied Science degrees, as well as technical certificates. The college also offers a number of continuing education and workforce development programs.
Drake State is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award the Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, and Associate in Applied Science degrees. The college is also accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.
Drake State Community and Technical College was established in 1961 as the Huntsville Industrial Vocational-Technical School. The school was created in response to the need for skilled workers in the growing aerospace and defense industries in Huntsville. The school began with just over 100 students and offered programs in industrial arts, trade and industrial education, and business education. In 1963, the name of the school was changed to Huntsville Industrial Education Center. In 1965, the school became a part of the Alabama Community College System and its name was changed to Huntsville State Technical Institute. In 1986, the name of the school was again changed, this time to Drake State Technical College, in honor of Alabama Senator John F. Drake, who was a strong supporter of technical education. In 1992, the college began offering the Associate in Arts degree, and in 1993, the name of the college was changed to its current name of J.F. Drake State Community and Technical College.
Drake State Community and Technical College is located on a 72-acre campus in Huntsville, Alabama. The campus includes several academic and administrative buildings, a library, a student center, a gymnasium, and a bookstore. The college also has a number of off-campus locations, including a Center for Business and Industry, a Center for Health Sciences, and a Child Development Center.
Drake State Community and Technical College offers over 50 academic programs leading to the Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, and Associate in Applied Science degrees, as well as technical certificates. The college’s academic programs are divided into five divisions: Business and Public Services; Health Sciences; Industrial and Engineering Technologies; Liberal Arts and Social Sciences; and Workforce Education and Development. The college also offers a number of continuing education and workforce development programs.
