Admission Requirements
Admission to Imperial Valley College (IVC) is open to all high school graduates and adults 18 years of age or older who can benefit from instruction. There are no entrance examinations. However, students are required to complete an assessment process to determine their level of skills in English and mathematics. This process is designed to help students and counselors select courses that match the student's skill level.
IVC uses a placement test called the Accuplacer for English and math. The test is not pass/fail. Rather, it is used to determine the student's level of skills in these subject areas. Based on the results of the test, the student is placed in the appropriate English and/or math course(s).
Students who have not completed high school or who have not taken the California High School Proficiency Exam (CHSPE) must complete the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST). The CBEST measures basic reading, mathematics, and writing skills. It is not pass/fail but is used, along with other information, to determine the student's readiness for college-level work.
Students who have not completed high school or the CHSPE and who have not taken the CBEST may be admitted to IVC on a provisional basis. These students are required to complete the following within their first semester at IVC:
• English as a Second Language (ESL) 052 with a grade of "C" or better, or
• ESL 054 with a grade of "C" or better, or
• ESL 060 with a grade of "C" or better, or
• ESL 070 with a grade of "C" or better
In addition, these students must complete one of the following:
• MATH 050 with a grade of "C" or better, or
• MATH 060 with a grade of "C" or better, or
• MATH 070 with a grade of "C" or better
Students who have not completed high school or the CHSPE, and who have not taken the CBEST, may be admitted to IVC on a conditional basis. These students are required to complete the following within their first semester at IVC:
• English as a Second Language (ESL) 052 with a grade of "C" or better, or
• ESL 054 with a grade of "C" or better, or
