Eastern Oklahoma State College was founded in 1908 as a normal school to train teachers. It became a two-year college in the 1960s and began offering four-year degrees in the 1980s. The college now offers over 50 degree and certificate programs.
The college's main campus is in Wilburton, with satellite campuses in McAlester and Idabel. The Wilburton campus includes a library, a gymnasium, and a performing arts center. The McAlester campus includes a nursing program.
The college's athletics teams are known as the Mountaineers. The school competes in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II. The Mountaineers have won several NJCAA championships in a variety of sports.
