CCSF is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, offering Associate degrees and Certificate programs.

CCSF was founded in 1935 as San Francisco Junior College and was later renamed after its location in the city's Sunset District. It was one of the first California Community Colleges, and has since grown to be the largest community college in the state and one of the largest in the country. CCSF offers over 100 Associate degree and Certificate programs, and serves more than 60,000 students each semester.

CCSF is well known for its diverse student body, which reflects the demographics of the city of San Francisco. The college has a large international student population, and is considered a "sanctuary school" for undocumented students. CCSF is also one of the few community colleges in the country with a free-standing School of Nursing.

The college is governed by a nine-member Board of Trustees, which is elected by the college's students, faculty, and staff. The Board is responsible for setting college policy, approving the college budget, and hiring the college's president. The current Board Chair is John Rizzo.

The college's budget is primarily derived from state and local funding, with student tuition and fees making up a small portion of the budget. CCSF is one of the few community colleges in California that does not charge out-of-state tuition.

CCSF is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (ACCJC/WASC). The college is also accredited by the California Board of Registered Nursing and the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission.
