The college was founded in 1961 as Bay College, a two-year junior college. It was the first community college in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The college was renamed Bay de Noc Community College in 1965.
The college has two campuses, the main campus in Escanaba and the West Campus in Iron Mountain. The college also has a satellite campus in Manistique.
