Through all the hardships of starting a new company and having limited resources, Alex demonstrated resourcefulness in building a 300,000 sq. ft. space into a thriving manufacturing facility serving the paint and packaging needs for several large fortune 500 companies.
Alex had no formal education but he did join the Marine Corp. “Everyone wins when people get an opportunity to show what they can do.” -Bob Ontiveros
Bob Ontiveros’ grandfather immigrated to Davenport from Mexico, and he and his siblings were raised with a strong work ethic. “As a child, if you wanted new shoes, you had to find the money. You had to work hard for it. You should have seen me as a kid walking down the block, asking people if I could cut their grass or clean their garage. I saw hard work in my parents. I saw it in my grandparents.” However, work is not the only thing he learned from his family in his youth. Despite having little, his mother not only raised the twelve family members in her home, but she fed most of the neighborhood. “If a child needed a meal, you were welcome in our home.” Working hard and providing an opportunity to others is synonymous with the Ontiveros family legacy.

Carver Scholars Program - Sponsored By The Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust
Scholarships are available to full-time (12 hours or more) students who will be starting their junior year in the fall semester of the award year. While amounts may vary somewhat, typical awards are $6,000 at public universities and $8,000 at the private colleges. Scholarships may be renewed for the senior year, but such renewal is not automatic, with students required to re-apply for a second year of support. Potential applicants must apply directly on-line to the participating college or university of their choice by clicking on the application link on the web site.
ELIGIBLE APPLICANTS
Sophomore students currently enrolled in one of the three Regents’ universities or one of the 22 participating four-year private institutions holding membership with the Iowa College Foundation
or
Sophomore students currently attending a community college in Iowa, who intend to transfer to one of the participating four-year institutions as a junior in the fall semester of the award year.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Residency. Students applying for scholarships must be a United States citizen and have graduated from an accredited high school in the state of Iowa or have been a resident of the state of Iowa for at least five consecutive years immediately prior to application.
Areas of Study. Students in all fields of study are eligible for an award.
Social Factors. Students must present evidence of unusual barriers they have encountered, or are facing, in their pursuit of full-time college attendance.
Financial Need. Students must demonstrate financial need on the basis of a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) filed prior to March 1st of the award year.
Merit. Students must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.8 on a 4.0 scale. Administrative officials at the participating institutions will be required to verify GPAs for accuracy based on the student’s official academic transcript.
SELECTION GUIDELINES
Participating colleges will be responsible for reviewing applications and selecting scholarship recipients for their particular institution.
Students selected for awards will be those who “fall between the cracks” of other financial aid programs. Similar to Roy Carver himself, who “pulled himself up by his bootstraps” and lived the American dream, awardees will be students of great potential and promise, who have worked hard to make ends meet and have been faced with challenging or debilitating situations in their lives.
In addition to grades and financial need, selection committees consider social barriers and other extenuating situations when choosing Carver Scholar recipients.
A qualified applicant must be able to demonstrate that his or her circumstances and accomplishments, when combined with financial and merit determination, might be overlooked in other types of student aid programs, but nevertheless represent high achievement and determination in the face of significant obstacles.
APPLICATION PROCESS
In order to be considered for a Carver Scholarship, an applicant is responsible for:
Completing a first-year or renewal on-line application form to be submitted electronically to the college or university you are planning to attend by clicking on the application link on this web site. The application form requires:
First-year applicants must provide a typed essay presenting evidence of the unusual social and/or other barriers that may deter you from attending college. The document may be “cut and pasted” or processed directly into the on-line application form. Essays are limited to 500 words.
First-year applicants must provide the names and e-mail addresses of two professional individuals (other than family members) to serve as references, whom you have asked to submit letters of support on your behalf, verifying that the information included in your essay is accurate. The purpose of the documentation is to confirm the difficulties you have overcome and to give insight into your character. At the time your application is submitted, the on-line system automatically forwards an e-mail to the address you provide for your references (teacher, physician, therapist, etc.). References should submit comments (limited to 250 words) via the link provided in their e-mail notification. These must be received by the April 1st submission deadline in order for your application to be considered complete. Administrative officials at the participating institutions will confirm authenticity of electronically submitted reference materials in advance of the selection process.
Applicants will also be responsible for filing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by March 1st of the award year for submission to the financial aid office of the college that you are planning to attend.
If you have further program-related questions or require assistance in preparing your application, please refer to the name and telephone number of the contact person (listed in Step 2 on the on-line application form) of the institution that you are planning to attend. Completed applications must be submitted and reference comments must be received on-line by April 1st. Applicants are encouraged to apply early.

Iowa Quad Cities Rotary – Doug & Lou Peterson “Mr. & Mrs. Rotary” Recognition Scholarship
This sixth scholarship, created in 2022, by members of the Iowa Quad Cities Rotary Club is to honor of one of their loyal and long-standing members, Doug Peterson and his wife, Louann. Doug is a past president of the club and has served on the Board of Directors for many years, currently in the position of club secretary. Doug and Lou initiated the club’s involvement in the International Rotary Youth Exchange Program by serving as host “Mom & Dad” for many exchange students in their home, while attending a year of high school in America. In addition, Doug and Lou headed up the district-wide Rotary Youth Exchange program for many years, overseeing the sponsorship of hundreds of inbound and outbound foreign exchange students, to help foster world peace and understanding within our global community. Doug has served on numerous boards and held positions of leadership within District 6000 of Rotary International, including assistant district governor.
Doug and his late wife, Lou, loved to serve Rotary together — especially by travelling to annual International Rotary Conventions, held in different cities throughout the world. It was always a treat for them to reestablish old friendships that were created under the Rotary “wheel”. They especially enjoyed reconnecting with past exchange students, of whom they have had the pleasure of hosting.
Since retiring from his job as an Industrial Engineer at Deere and Co., Doug has remained active in his church, by among other things, directing the church choir; and he still enjoys playing his double-belled euphonium in various brass ensembles and bands in the QC area.

Scott County Voiture #77 Nursing Scholarship
La Societe des Quarante Hommes et Huit Chevaux is an independent, by invitation, honor organization of U.S. veterans, more commonly known as the forty and eight.
The forty and eight is committed to charitable and patriotic aims. Our purpose is to uphold and defend the United States Constitution, to promote the well being of veterans and their widows and orphans, and actively participate in selected charitable endeavors, which include programs that promote child welfare and nurses training.
The titles and symbols of the forty and eight reflects it’s First World War origins. Americans were transported to the battle front on French trains within boxcars stenciled with a “40/8”, denoting its capacity to hold either forty men or eight horses. This uncomfortable mode of transportation was familiar to all who fought in the trenches; a common small misery among American soldiers who thereafter found “40/8” a lighthearted symbol of the deeper service, sacrifice and unspoken honors of war that bind all who have born the battle.
The forty & eight was founded in 1920 by American veterans returning from France. Originally an arm of the American Legion, the Forty & Eight became an independent and separately incorporated veteran’s organization in 1960. Membership is by invitation of honorably discharged veterans and honorably serving members of the United States Armed Forces.
Scholarships are awarded on the basis of financial need and such personal qualities as patriotism, character, and leadership abilities as demonstrated in school and community activities.
The application, which can be found here, must be completed and returned to Voiture #77 on or before April 15th in care of:
