The Dr. Steven J. Shire Memorial Scholarship is awarded each year to the Cañada College Digital Art and Animation student who would like to expand her/his knowledge and skill in photography. The award is generously donated by the Shire family in memory of Steve, a scientist and lover of digital art who passed away in June 2017. Steve fulfilled his childhood dream of becoming a chemist and began his career at Genentech where, over 32 years, he achieved more than 10 patents and published around 90 reviews and 100 scientific articles, including his recent book “Monoclonal Antibodies: Meeting the Challenges in Manufacturing, Formulation, Delivery and Stability of Final Drug Product,” (2015). Woodhead Publishing Series on Biomedicine (An imprint of Elsevier, London). Steve was an educator who served as a member of the Keck Graduate Institute Advisory Council, and as an adjunct faculty member of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences for the University of Connecticut, USC School of Pharmacy, and University of Kansas. He volunteered for worthy causes throughout his life. This scholarship is made in the name of Elizabeth Rose Miller, who was a graduate of the San Mateo County Community College District in English. She was a published author of the American Revolution as seen by the British newspapers. She was also the Head Librarian at both the Redwood City Tribune and the Palo Alto Times newspapers.
The annual stipend should be given to a student with a minimum GPA of 3.5, who is also a full time student who will be transferring to a 4-yeart academic institution for an AB or BA degree in Journalism or English! In the tradition of CSM Professor Joe McDonough’s social activism and AFT 1493 Union work, this scholarship is aimed at SMCCCD students who are actively involved in the fight for social justice. This activity can be through a campus organization or club, or a community group/organization. Recipients of the Ken Hamilton and Jessica Diane Memorial Scholarship must be in a Liberal Arts or Creative Arts field and have financial need. The student should have a minimum GPA of 2.75, should be a full-time student and can be a graduating high school senior, continuing student or transfer student.
This scholarship is in memory of Ken Hamilton who was raised in the Bay Area and graduated from Aragon High School in 1991 and was a D.J. on KFJC 89.7 FM. Sadly, the family lost their dear family friend Jessica Diane in 2009. Jessica was one of the scholarship’s most committed supporters and she requested that those who wanted to honor her memory do so by contributing here.
