Northern Career Institute (NCI) is a public not-for-profit career college located in Eastlake, Ohio, United States. NCI offers diploma and certificate programs in the fields of Medical Assisting, Medical Billing and Coding, and Licensed Practical Nursing.
NCI was founded in 1961 1962 as Willoughby-Eastlake School of Practical Nursing. In 2015 the school was renamed Northern Career Institute and began offering certificate programs in Medical Assisting and Medical Billing and Coding.
NCI is accredited by the Council on Occupational Education. NCI’s nursing program is accredited by the Ohio Board of Regents, the Ohio Transfer to Degree Guarantee, and the Ohio Board of Nursing. NCI's Billing and Coding Specialist program is accredited by the Ohio Board of Regents.
NCI has an open admissions policy. All candidates for admission to the Northern Career Institute are considered on individual merits, without discrimination on the basis of age, creed, national or ethnic origin, race, color, sex, marital status, handicap, political affiliations or beliefs. However, applicants to the nursing program must be a high school graduate or have earned a GED or Adult Diploma, AND currently be credentialed through the Ohio Department of Health as a State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA) or equivalent from another state OR completed a prerequisite course of Medical Terminology and passed with a “B” or better within the last 5 years.
NCI’s main campus is located in Eastlake, Ohio, on the shore of Lake Erie. NCI also has a branch campus in Willoughby, Ohio.
NCI offers a variety of student services, including academic advising, career services, and tutoring.
NCI’s nursing program is designed to prepare students for a career in nursing. The program includes classroom instruction, laboratory work, and clinical experience. Upon completion of the program, students are eligible to take the NCLEX-LPN exam to become a registered licensed practical nurse.
NCI's billing and coding program students who successfully complete the program will be qualified to take four certification exams offered by (NHA) National Healthcare Association and (AAPC) American Academy of Professional Coders:
1. (CBCS) Certified Medical Billing and Coding Specialist
2. (CERHS) Certified Electronic Health Record Specialist
3. (CMAA) Certified Medical Administrative Assistant
4. (CPC) Certified Professional Coder
