Albert D. Ernest, Jr. Caring Award

The Caring Awards committee seeks to recognize a UNF student that embodies the spirit of caring, volunteerism, and humanitarianism. The award is an opportunity to recognize and honor the bright, dedicated, and selfless individuals who take the time and strive to make the world a better place to live.
The UNF student who is selected will receive a bronze sculpture created by the late Frank Eliscu, nationally known sculptor, designer of the Heisman Trophy, the Oval Office’s Presidential Eagle and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The recipient will be honored during a commencement ceremony and will receive $1,000.00 to donate in their name to a charity of their choosing. Four finalists will receive $200.00 each to donate to their selected charity. All finalists are invited to attend an awards luncheon.
The Albert D. Ernest, Jr. Caring Award, established in 1992 by the friends of Albert D. Ernest, Jr. and Barnett bank of Jacksonville, FL, is a fitting tribute to a UNF student who displays the spirit of caring, humanitarianism and volunteerism for which Mr. Ernest is admired. Dr. Carolyn Williams History Research Award Endowment

The Dr. Carolyn Williams Research Award was established in honor of Dr. Carolyn Williams, Associate Professor of History at UNF until her passing in 2012. In 1975, Dr. Williams graduated from UNF with a BA in History, subsequently earning a Ph.D. at UCLA. She returned to Jacksonville, serving for more than two decades as a beloved member of UNF history faculty, where she specialized in U.S., women’s, African American, and local history, a subject about which she became fascinated in her later years.
The Department of History is seeking applications for the Dr. Carolyn Williams Research Award. Grants will provide [up to] $1500 to support original research on any historical topic. Undergraduate and graduate History majors are encouraged to apply. Applicants must have a minimum UNF GPA of 3.0 to be eligible for consideration. Please submit an application, consisting of the following:
• A research proposal (no more than 350 words) describing the nature of the project, its significance, and any work which has already been done by the applicant
• A brief bibliography of scholarship on the topic of the project
• A brief statement explaining how the project will be disseminated, e.g. publication in a journal, presentation at a conference, museum exhibition, on-line publication, submission to a class (note: plans can be tentative).
• A brief statement of support from a supervising faculty member or other professional (may be sent directly to Dr. Sheffler)

This gift supports Hicks Honor College students as well as Honors in the Major if a junior or senior who are selected as Hicks Fellows and who will work closely with an assigned faculty mentor. This gift supports the Hicks Honors College students participate in study abroad experiences.
Must be enrolled in the Hicks Honors College. Must have an approved study abroad trip scheduled to be completed prior to graduation.
