1926 Study Club Scholarship
The 1926 Study Club met as the oldest women’s club in Hockley County for more than 75 years before it disbanded. The club established a scholarship fund in 1988 to benefit a history-government student. Minimum qualifications include: 2.50 grade point average; full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more); and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Students are selected for the award by the faculty of the Social Science Department. more...

Academic Promise Scholarship
The Academic Promise Scholarship is available for students who plan to major in sociology (first preference) or psychology at South Plains College. The scholarship was established by Loy and Jana Daniel of Brownfield, Texas, and their son Brant Farrar of Lubbock, Texasm all three of whom are alumni of SPC. In addition, Mrs. Daniel and Mr. Farrar are professors at SPC teaching sociology in the Behavioral Science Department. The scholarship was named because of the promise SPC makes to support the success of students, as well as the promise scholarship recipients make to work to be successful in their coursework. In order to be considered, applicants must enroll in at lease 12 semester credit hours as a full-time student and have a minimum 2.50 grade point average. more...

Albert And Doris June Melton Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship program was established by Stevan and Darlene Melton of Levelland in honor of Mr. Melton’s parents. Albert and Doris June grew up in farming families in the Pettiet area of Hockley County. A veteran of WWII, Albert returned to Levelland after the war and worked as a heavy equipment operation until his retirement. Doris June was among the first students to enroll at SPC when it opened in 1958. As a mother of two young children, she was part of a group of women who saw an opportunity to go to college. Mrs. Melton graduated from SPC in 1960 and went on to complete a bachelor’s and master’s degree at Texas Tech University. She taught 28 years in Levelland public schools before retiring. more...

Alton "Pete" And Charleen Pettiet Honorary Scholarship
This scholarship endowment was established by Bradley Pettiet to honor his parents Alton “Pete” and Charleen Pettiet for their long-time support and involvement in education and especially South Plains College. Mr. Pettiet, a native of Ropesville and graduate of Ropes High School, has served as a member of the SPC Board of Regents since March 1989. The Pettiets have worked in agricultural chemical sales and in agency insurance. Brad Pettiet, a 1978 graduate of SPC, is a practicing attorney in Lubbock. The scholarship is awarded to an outstanding graduate of Ropes High School who is an incoming freshman at SPC. To be eligible, applicants must enroll in a minimum of 12 semester credit hours and maintain a minimum 2.5 grade point average. more...

Alvin And Mary Walker Memorial Scholarship
The Alvin and Mary Walker Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a freshman or sophomore student who is a graduate of a high school located in Hockley County. Minimum qualifications include: 2.50 grade point average; full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more); and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. This scholarship program was established by the friends and family of the late Alvin and Mary K. (Franklin) Walker. Both were graduates of Pep High School and attended South Plains College. Mr. Walker worked many years for K-Bar Texas Electric before his death in 1990. Mrs. Walker served as Hockley County Clerk until her death in 2003. more...

Amy Drennan Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship endowment was established by Chad and Jody Drennan of Levelland, Texas in memory of Mr. Drennan’s sister Amy Lynn Drennan who died in March 2010. Prior to a life-changing incident at age 14 that left her disabled for 20 years, Amy had planned to attend South Plains College to study to become a public school teacher, specializing in deaf education. In order to be considered for the scholarship, candidates must be a returning sophomore (at least 30 semester credit hours completed), have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.50, and enroll full-time as a teacher education major. First preference will be given to a student who have been honorably discharged from any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces and who plans to major in teacher education. Andersen Gruhlkey Memorial Scholarship
Andersen Gruhlkey, a graduate of Whiteface High School and South Plains College, was pursuing a degree from West Texas A & M University at the time of his passing in 2019. He was also employed at First Bank and Trust (formerly AimBank) in Levelland and was a member of The Heights Fellowship in Lubbock. From an outpouring of memorial gifts, this endowment was created to memorialize a beautiful soul. Recipient must be a graduate from one of the high schools in SPC’s service area that is classified as 3A or smaller, incoming freshman, and must have and maintain a grade point average of 2.5 or higher. more...

Ann Deardorf Memorial Scholarship
The Ann Deardorf Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a freshman or sophomore student who is enrolled in the Child Development program. To be eligible, students must have a minimum 2.50 grade point average, enroll full-time (12 semester hours or more) in the Child Development program and be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Selection is made by program faculty. The scholarship honors Ann Deardorf who taught child development at the SPC downtown Lubbock Campus from 1980 until her death in 1984. Annette Davis-Smith Memorial And Aaron C. Smith Honorary Scholarship
This scholarship program honors the memory of Dr. Annette Davis-Smith who developed South Plains College’s Associate of Arts in Teaching Degree program and taught in the program for 14 years. It was established by her husband Aaron Smith of Sundown and her mother Sarah A. “Toni” Ivy of Lubbock. The scholarship recognizes an outstanding student enrolled in the AAT program who plans to become a public school teacher. To be considered, applications must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, plan to enroll in at least six semester credit hours in the AAT program, and maintain a minimum 2.50 grade point average. Recipients are chosen for the scholarship by faculty in the program. Dr. Smith was known for her dedication and service to the college and her students. She was instrumental in establishing the transfer partnership between South Plains College and the Texas Tech University College of Education. This partnership was recognized by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board with the Texas Higher Education Star Award in 2008. Dr. Davis-Smith died in 2018. more...

Arthur And Lula Quest Memorial Scholarship
The Arthur and Lula Quest Memorial Scholarship is a general college scholarship program that was established through a generous bequest from the estate of Ruby Quest Urban of Lubbock, Texas. Ms. Urban established the scholarship program in memory of her parents who were business leaders in the Lubbock community. Minimum qualifications include: 2.50 grade point average; full-time or part-time enrollment (6 semester hours or more) in an associate degree program; and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Consideration is given to financial need in awarding the scholarship. Additionally, scholarships are made available to students who major in pre-engineering at SPC. more...

Arvie E. Walker, Jr. Scholarship
Established by James and Robbie Walker of Lubbock, this scholarship honors Mr. Walker’s father Arvie Walker. Mr. Walker graduated from Texas Tech University in 1948 and worked as a surface geologist in the White Flat field near Abilene, Texas before sitting on wells and examining well-bore samples. His career began with Sun Oil Company before he became an independent geologist. He was involved in oil and gas exploration in Texas, New Mexico, Kentucky and West Virginia over the span of his career. Jim Walker worked 22 years at South Plains College as dean of continuing education and workforce development and later retired as vice president for academic affairs in 2015. Mrs. Walker served as a public school teacher and librarian in Lubbock and Levelland. The scholarship recognizes an outstanding student who is pursuing studies in geology or in the physical sciences. In order to be considered for the scholarship, the applicant must be a U.S. Citizen and/or permanent resident, must enroll as a full-time student (minimum 12 semester credit hours), and must have and maintain at least a 2.50 cumulative grade point average. more...

The Lubbock Chapter of the Automotive Service Association has made this scholarship possible to be awarded to a second-year Automotive Technology student. Aubrey And Madine Baker Memorial Endowment
The Aubrey and Madine Baker Memorial Scholarship is a general college scholarships awarded to freshmen or sophomore students who exhibit academic merit, personal character and leadership. Minimum qualifications include: 2.50 grade point average; full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more); and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. The scholarship program was established through a bequest from Mr. Baker who died in 2004. Known as “Shorty” Baker, he was a music enthusiast who enjoyed student performances at SPC. more...

Barry And Rene Heard Scholarship
The Barry and Rene Heard Scholarship is a general college scholarship that is awarded to a freshman student who is a graduate of Whitharral High School. Minimum qualifications include: 2.50 grade point average; full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more); and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. The Heards, who have a long-time association with South Plains College, have established an endowed scholarship program that assists an incoming student. Mr. Heard, who grew up in the Whitharral community, has farmed in Hockley County for many years. The Heards’ two children attended SPC, and Mrs. Heard retired from South Plains College with 21 years of service. more...

Bethany Loper Memorial Scholarship In Music
This scholarship endowment was established by the family of Bethany Loper, who was a sophomore music student at South Plains College when she died in an automobile accident on her way home in 2013. Loper graduated from Holliday High School where she was actively involved in music and UIL journalism and news writing and won many district and state titles. In order to be considered for the scholarship, students must enroll full-time at SPC as a creative arts or fine arts music major and have at least a 2.5 grade point average. more...

Billy Sheek Memorial Scholarship
The Billy Sheek Memorial Scholarship program is awarded to a freshman or sophomore student who majors in agriculture sciences. Minimum qualifications include: 2.50 grade point average; full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more) in the agriculture program; and U.S. Citizen or permanent resident. Recipients are chosen by the agriculture faculty. The late Mrs. Cora Sanders of Levelland established the Billy Sheek Memorial Scholarship in Agriculture in memory of her grandson who majored in agribusiness at SPC prior to his death. more...

Biology Founding Faculty Scholarship
This scholarship fund was established by the Faculty and former students of the Biology Department and honors faculty members who helped found the biology and life sciences curriculum at the college. Some of these professors included Henry Lucke, J.B. Balch, Scott Couch, Polly Parmer, Glenna Cooper and Jim Blassingame. The scholarship is awarded to an outstanding biology major who enrolls as a full-time student and who maintains a 3.0 grade point average. more...

Bliss Family Scholarship
This scholarship endowment has been established by Tony and Tess Bliss of Lubbock, Texas, who believe that South Plains College provides a quality education for area students. In order to be eligible, applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and plan to enroll in at least six semester hours of coursework at SPC with first preference given to pre-medicine majors and second preference given to enrollment in any career or technical educational program. Preference is also given to students who are first-generation college students. Recipients must have and maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.0. Mr. and Mrs. Bliss established the scholarship to expand opportunities for students to receive a college education in order to be useful and productive members of society. more...

Bob Beck Scholarship In Chemistry
The Bob Beck Scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student majoring in chemistry. Minimum qualifications include: 3.00 grade point average; full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more); and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. This scholarship honors Bob Beck, professor of chemistry. Professor Beck joined the SPC faculty in the fall of 1959. He taught 37 years in the Science Department, which included 15 years as department chairman. He retired in 1996. Professor Beck was named to receive the Faculty Excellence Award in 1969. Through the generosity of Science Department faculty, former students and friends, the scholarship program was endowed in 2008. more...

Bob Veretto Memorial Scholarship
The Bob Veretto Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a freshman or sophomore student who majors in finance, business or accounting. Minimum qualifications include: 2.50 grade point average; full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more) in the business program; and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Mr. Veretto was a Levelland business leader involved in banking and agriculture who believed in hard work and honesty. The family and friends of Mr. Veretto established the endowed scholarship program to recognize his many contributions to Levelland and Hockley County. This scholarship honors western swing music legend Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys. The scholarship was established by the Lincoln County (N.M.) Cowboy Symposium Committee and has been supported through the generosity of the The Hubbard Museum of the American West and the Museum of the Horse in Ruidoso, N.M. Minimum qualifications include: 2.50 grade point average; full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more); demonstrated musical talent through audition; and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. more...

Braulio, Hilda & Jose Cuesta Memorial Scholarship
The Braulio, Hilda and Jose Cuesta Memorial Scholarship is awarded to students who pursue a career in psychology, child development or pre-medicine. Minimum qualifications include: 2.50 grade point average; full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more); and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. The scholarship program was established by the family and friends of Dr. and Mrs. B.J. Cuesta and Dr. Jose Cuesta, their son. Dr. B.J. Cuesta practiced general medicine in Levelland for 22 years until his death in 1988. Dr. Jose Cuesta was a child psychiatrist in Houston at the time of his death. Mrs. Cuesta died in 2009. more...

The Thompson Family Cosmetology Scholarship has been established by Buddy and Sarah Thompson of Levelland. The scholarship recognizes an outstanding student in the cosmetology program. The Burk B. Roberts Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a freshman or sophomore student majoring in business administration. General qualifications include: 2.50 grade point average; full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more) in the business associate degree program; and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. The late Burnett and Martha Roberts established four scholarship programs at South Plains College in memory of family members. This scholarship program honors their son. Burnett Roberts served 16 years on the SPC Foundation Board of Directors and supported numerous community and civic projects during his lifetime. more...

Virgil “Buster” Payne was born into a musical family and at an early age began playing fiddle, banjo, mandolin and ukulele. Over his lifetime, he performed with a number of musical groups throughout Eastern New Mexico and the Texas Panhandle, playing fiddle in the style of Bob Wills. This scholarship program was established by his family and friends to assist a student majoring in commercial music. The C.M. and Cora Sanders Memorial Scholarship is a general college scholarship awarded to a freshman or sophomore student who demonstrates academic merit, leadership and personal character. Qualifications include: minimum 2.50 grade point average; full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more) in an associate degree program; and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. During their lifetime, C.M. and Cora Sanders were dear friends of South Plains College. Charlie Sanders served as a member of the original Board of Regents from 1957 to 1967 and is credited with obtaining the Texan Victory Bell that is located at the entrance to Texan Dome. Capital Farm Credit Services Scholarship
The Capital Farm Credit Scholarship is awarded to freshman or sophomore student who majors in Agriculture. Minimum qualifications include: 2.50 grade point average; full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more); and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. The scholarship program was chartered in 2006 by Chris Roberts, then president of First Ag Credit Levelland to benefit a student majoring in Agriculture. The company named changed in 2008 and the fund reached endowment status in 2010. more...

Carroll And Marcie Bowen Memorial Scholarship
The Carroll and Marcie Bowen Scholarship is a general college scholarship that is awarded based on academic merit, personal character and leadership. Minimum qualifications include: 2.50 grade point average; full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more) in an associate degree or certificate program; and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. The Kenneth F. and Harle G. Montgomery Foundation helped establish the Carroll and Marcie Bowen Scholarship program. Mr. Bowen served as manager of the Double U Ranch in Hockley County and served many years on the SPC Foundation Board of Directors. Mrs. Bowen was a generous contributor to the scholarship fund and continued her husband’s service to the Foundation as a member of the Foundation Board of Directors and past secretary to the board. Ch Foundation Non-Traditional Student Scholarship
The CH Foundation, established by the late Christine DeVitt in 1986, provides scholarship funds to expand opportunities for area students to attend South Plains College. This scholarship is awarded to adult learners (age 25 and older) who are returning to college to improve their career skills and employment opportunities. Minimum qualifications include: 2.50 grade point average; full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more); and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Charles "Chuck" Giddens Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship honors the memory of Charles “Chuck” Giddens who was an employee at Universal Treating Company at the time of his death in 1982. The scholarship program was established by the employees of Universal Treating and the late Gary Stacy, the company’s owner and a former member of the South Plains College Board of Regents. This is a general scholarship program that is awarded to a full-time or part-time student who has a minimum grade point average of 2.25. more...

The Charles and Jean Miller Scholarship program recognizes an outstanding sophomore pre-engineering major. Minimum qualifications include: 3.00 grade point average; full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more) in the pre-engineering program; and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Mr. Miller served on South Plains College Board of Regents from 1988 to 2013. He worked as an engineer for American Standard Oil Company (Amoco) for 32 years before retiring and during that time was instrumental in founding the South Plains Chapter API Scholarship program. The Cynthia Caswell Blessen Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a freshman or sophomore student who is majoring in teacher education. Minimum qualifications include: 2.50 grade point average; full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more); and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. This scholarship program was established by the Blessen and Caswell families of Levelland in memory of their wife, mother and daughter. Cindy Blessen was a 1976 graduate of SPC and while a student performed with the traveling musical group “The Baker?s Dozen.” She devoted her career to teaching music to others. She died in 2008. These scholarship program was established by the Blessen and Caswell families of Levelland in memory of their wife, mother and daughter. Cindy Garcia Memorial Scholarship In Respiratory Care
This scholarship program remembers Cindy Garcia, a graduate of SPC who served 17 years as a lead respiratory therapist with University Medical Center in Lubbock. It is awarded to an outstanding student enrolled in the College’s Respiratory Care Program. Minimum qualifications include: 2.50 grade point average; full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more); and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. The scholarship program was initiated by Dr. Cynthia Jumper, professor and chair of internal medicine and associate dean of human services management at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, and was also funded by the UMC Foundation. more...

The Cole Family Scholarship is awarded to a freshman or sophomore student who exhibits outstanding qualities of scholarship, personal character and leadership. Minimum qualifications include: 3.00 grade point average; full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more) in an associate degree program; and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Financial need may be a consideration. This scholarship program honors a long-time Hockley County family that has supported education and young people in many ways. Dan And Carolyn Hook Honorary Scholarship
This scholarship program was established by Dan and Carolyn Hook of Levelland to provide tuition and fee assistance for a student who is enrolled in the Vocational Nursing program. Mr. Hook has practiced law in Levelland for more than 50 years and served as the College’s attorney for 33 years before retiring from that position. During his tenure, he was general counsel to four SPC presidents. His community service has included a term as president of the Levelland Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and volunteer work with youth baseball and basketball programs. He and his wife Carolyn are long-time supporters of SPC Texan Athletics and members of the Texan Club. He has been the owner of Hockley County Abstract Company for 20 years. Mrs. Hook taught at West Elementary with Levelland ISD for 11 years and has also been actively involved in the community. Selection is made by the faculty of the Social Science Department. The late David Stanley graduated from South Plains College and later served 22 years as a history and government professor at SPC. Established by SPC alumna Courtney Bullard Hurst along with her husband Justin Hurst of Austin, Texas, this scholarship endowment honors the memory of Mr. Hurst’s mother, Deborah J. Scott. Mrs. Hurst is a graduate of SPC’s Upward Bound program and preference is given to Upward Bound graduates who attend SPC. Upward Bound is part of the TRIO Programs which assist low income and disadvantaged students enter, succeed and graduate college. SPC’s program was implemented in 2003 and has served more than 400 high school students in Brownfield, Morton, Levelland, Whitharral and Whiteface. This scholarship honors Delbert Barry who owned and operated K-Bar Texas Electric Company in Levelland until his retirement in 1997. The scholarship was established by his wife Nancy Bryant Berry and son Donny Barry following his death in 2001. The Dennis Patton Memorial Athletic Scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student who participates in the College’s Rodeo Program. Minimum qualifications include: 2.50 grade point average; full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more); and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. This scholarship honors the memory of Dennis Patton who was a true SPC Texan. Mr. Patton played basketball for the Texans from 1964-66 and was co-captain of the first team to win a WJCAC championship. He later served as head coach of the Texans for six seasons from 1974-80. He was serving as a member of the SPC Board of Regents at the time of his death in 2007. The scholarship was made possible by his family and friends. The Derl A. DeArmond Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a freshman or sophomore Computer Information Systems major. Qualifications include: full-time enrollment (12 or more semester hours) in the program; minimum 2.50 grade point average; U.S. citizen or permanent resident. The scholarship program was established by the DeArmond Family in memory of their son. Derl studied computer science in the early 1980s when the floppy disk was in the design stage. Because he died at age 19 and did not realize his college dream, the family has chosen to give young people an opportunity to realize their dream in the computer science field. more...

Don Marble Memorial And Nancy Marble Honorary Scholarship
To honor the memory of her father and pay tribute to her mother, SPC alumna Donette Marble has established the Don Marble Memorial and Nancy Marble Honorary Scholarship. Mr. Marble farmed cotton near Floydada, Texas, and was an agricultural leader, serving as president of the Plains Cotton Growers Association, as well as the National Cotton Association. The scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in agriculture or agri-business. In order to be considered, students must have a minimum 2.5 grade point average and enroll full-time (minimum 12 semester hours) in an agricultural program at SPC. Donette Marble attended South Plains College and was a member of the Lady Texan Basketball team that won the College’s first WJCAC women’s conference championship. The team went on to win the college’s first NJCAA Region V Tournament Championship and Ms. Marble was picked tournament MVP. The Lady Texans advanced to the NJCAA Women’s Basketball Championships, placing fifth in the nation in 1977. Ms. Marble currently resides in Midland, Texas. more...

Don Stroud Memorial Scholarship
The Don Stroud Memorial Scholarship is awarded to an outstanding freshman or sophomore art major. Minimum qualifications include: 2.50 grade point average; outstanding artistic talent as demonstrated by a portfolio of artwork; full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more); and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. A founding faculty member of the art department, Don Stroud served 30 years as an art professor and chair of the Fine Arts Department and later as a member of the SPC Board of Regents. The mosaic “Wild Horses” in the foyer of the Christine DeVitt Fine Arts Center is one example of his artistic contributions to SPC. He died in 1991. Donald Caddell Memorial Scholarship In Law Enforcement
The family and friends of Donald Caddell established this endowment to assist an SPC student majoring in law enforcement or criminal justice. Mr. Caddell was a life-long resident of Hockley County and served 28 years with the Hockley County Sheriff’s Department. He served as Hockley County Sheriff from 1996 to his retirement in 2004. In order to be eligible, students must enroll in at least 12 semester credit hours in law enforcement or criminal justice and have a minimum 2.5 grade point average. more...

Dorothy Lunette Dickson Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Mary Lu Dickson Grappe of Levelland and Linda Dickson of Carrollton in honor of their mother’s 24 years of service as a faculty member at South Plains College. Lunette Dickson retired from SPC in 1993 as professor of business administration. During her 16-year tenure as chairperson of the Business Administration Department, the department experienced its greatest growth and expansion in programs, students and technology. Mrs. Dickson died in 2019. The scholarship program recognizes an outstanding student in the business administration program. Dr. Wiri And Dr. Supiva Wiriyathian Scholarship In Nursing
The Dr. Wiri and Dr. Suvipa Wiriyathian Scholarship is awarded to a student enrolled in the Associate Degree Nursing program. Minimum requirements include acceptance into the Associate Degree Program, minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5, and full-time enrollment in the program. This scholarship honors two long-time physicians who have practiced medicine in the Levelland community for more than 30 years. Dr. Wiri, a general surgeon, and Dr. Suvipa, a pediatrician, have supported the community in many ways. Mike and Janna Worley of Levelland wished to recognize that service through this scholarship program for nursing students. The E. Wade and Lori Wilson Scholarship is awarded to a freshman or sophomore student majoring in kinesiology. Minimum qualifications include: 2.50 grade point average; full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more); and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. The scholarship program has been established by Wade and Lori Oswalt Wilson of Lubbock. Mrs. Wilson, originally from Abernathy, was a Lady Texan basketball player during the 1980-81 and 1981-82 seasons. While at SPC, her life was positively touched by PE instructor Judy Bryant. They have established this scholarship in part to honor Professor Bryant who retired as chairperson of the Physical Education Department in 2011 and also to offer financial support to future students studying in the department. The Earl and June Gerstenberger Scholarship is awarded to an outstanding freshman or sophomore student who majors in agriculture. Minimum qualifications include: 3.00 grade point average; full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more); and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. The Gerstenbergers helped start South Plains College. Earl was a member of the college?s original faculty hired in 1958. In his 35 years with the college, he served as an instructor and chairman of the agriculture department, dean of men, dean of students and vice president for student affairs and administration. June worked 28 years with the college, retiring from the business office as administrative assistant for financial services. Eddie And Donna Cook Paxton Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship program was established by the families of Brett, Keith, Todd and Micah Paxton in memory of their parents Eddie and Donna Paxton who died in 2017. Mr. Paxton was a community leader and real estate developer who began his 48-year career in Levelland in real estate appraising and lending. He co-owned and operated Paxton-Harpole Lumber Company during which time he developed his first housing addition to the city. He worked for a time in the insurance industry before establishing Paxton Real Estate in 1976. In 1986, he developed the Ridgecrest housing addition in Levelland. He also served as president of the Levelland Independent School District Board of Trustees for many years. He retired from the real estate brokerage in 2000. Mrs. Paxton worked more than 20 years in the banking industry, where she advanced through the ranks of Continental National Bank in Fort Worth to become the highest ranking female bank officer in Fort Worth at the time. She remained at the bank until the couple married and she moved to Levelland. In order to be considered for the scholarship, students must be a business major with plans to work in banking, insurance or real estate. This scholarship has been established by Stephan and Emmalie John of Levelland in memory of Mr. John’s parents. Edward John’s career with Southwester Bell Telephone/AT&T spanned forty two years. After his retirement, he was engaged in ranching in Carrizo Springs, TX. Mrs. John worked in the Dimmit County Tax Assessor-Collector’s Office as chief deputy and was later elected to the office of County Tax Assessor-Collector, a position she held for twenty two years. This scholarship was established by the family and friends of Elroy Wisian who was a Lubbock entrepreneur and businessman at the time of his death. Mr. Wisian also served a number of years as a Methodist minister. The scholarship recognizes an outstanding sophomore business administration major who has an interest in entrepreneurship. The recipient must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident who enrolls in at least six semester hours of credit and maintains at least a 2.5 cumulative grade point average. more...

Etta Charlene Blume Memorial Scholarship
The Etta Charlene Blume Scholarship was established by Phelps and Dianne Blume of Levelland in memory of Mr. Blume’s mother taught for 25 years in public schools in Amherst and Sudan. She taught first through sixth grades and also served as an assistant to the Amherst High girls basketball coach before leaving teaching to raise her family. Phelps Blume has worked as a certified public accountant in Levelland for the past 30 years and is a partner in the firm of Myatt and Blume. Dianne Blume is a homemaker who is also a seamstress and quilt-maker. The scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student who is majoring in accounting or finance. This scholarship honors Frank Hunt, who served 28 years as dean of the Technical Education Division at SPC. Under his leadership, the division grew from 12 technical programs and faculty in 1967 to more than 40 programs with 70 faculty members when he retired in 1995. The Free the Music Scholarship program was established by SPC alumnus Jerrod Niemann, who has made a name for himself as a country music songwriter and recording artist. The scholarship is named for Niemann’s second major album recording which included Top 15 “Shinin’ On Me” and poignant ballad “Only God Could Love You More.” From Academy of Country Music, Country Music Association and CMT Award nominations, to headlining and touring with some of Country’s hottest acts – Dierks Bentley, Brad Paisley, and Keith Urban – Niemann continues to make his mark by creatively pushing boundaries while still offering a sincere nod to the legends before him. Gage Thompson Memorial Scholarship
Established by Connie and Jim Belcher of Lubbock, this scholarship honors Mrs. Belcher’s parents. Elmer Lee Roy Thompson and Gloria Jeanne Gage were married 64 years before her death in 2009. To honor her father’s unique abilities and work ethic, the focus of the scholarship is on SPC programs which require “hands-on” work. Students who enroll in one of the following technical programs are eligible for consideration: automotive collision repair technology, automotive technology, diesel service technology, electrical and power transmission technology, heating, air conditioning and refrigeration technology, industrial manufacturing/emerging technologies and welding technology. First preference is also given to students who enter SPC with a general education diploma (GED) and second preference is for a student who has served in any branch of the United States military. Applicants must have a minimum 2.5 grade point average and must enroll full-time in one of the qualified programs. The Gary Wynn Scholarship is awarded to an outstanding freshman or sophomore student who plans to major in sociology. Minimum qualifications include: 2.50 grade point average; full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more); and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Selection is made by the faculty of the Social Science Department. This scholarship honors the memory of Gary Wynn who taught anthropology, history and sociology at South Plains College for 30 years. Professor Wynn, who retired in 1996 from the college, was among the first faculty members to teach college courses at the former Reese Air Force Base in the 1970s. The scholarship program was established to recognize his 30 years of service to the college. Mr. Wynn died in 2006. The scholarship program was established by a generous bequest from the late Gene Parkinson, who died in June 2009. Mr. Parkinson operated Parkinson Electronics for more than 50 years. George And Carole Lawless Honorary Scholarship
The children of George and Carole Lawless have established an endowed scholarship in honor of their parents who were associated with South Plains College for 24 years. Mr. Lawless joined the SPC faculty in 1973 as an instructor in law enforcement technology. He was named program coordinator in 1975 and held that position until his retirement in 1999. During that time he and other faculty grew the law enforcement program from 25 students to more than 350 majors. He received the Excellence in Teaching Award in 1986, and also served as chairperson of the Professional Services and Energy Department. Mrs. Lawless served as director of nursing at Cook Memorial Hospital in Levelland and later operated a home health business and assisted living senior management service. The scholarship program recognizes outstanding students who are majoring in law enforcement technology or an allied health program. To be eligible, applicants must be a returning sophomore student in law enforcement or a health science program, enroll as a full-time student and have a minimum grade point average of 2.5. The names of George and Butch Price are synonymous with community service, caring and giving in the Levelland community. To perpetuate these values, they established a scholarship program for students majoring in pre-medicine. The Prices owned and operated George Price Funeral Directors for more than 45 years. The George T. and Beula May Hatton Scholarship is awarded to a freshman or sophomore student majoring in business administration. Hatton became residents of Levelland in 1939 and operated Hatton Oil Co., a wholesale and retail outlet for gas and oil products. He later served as a director and vice president at Levelland State Bank. Mrs. Hatton died in 1981 and Mr. Hatton established this scholarship fund in his wife?s memory. He died in 1995. more...

Harley And Anne Bulls Memorial Scholarship In Fine Arts Music
The Harley and Anne Bulls Memorial Scholarship is awarded to an outstanding freshman or sophomore student who majors in fine arts music. Minimum qualifications include: 2.50 grade point average; full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more) in the music program; and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Harley and Anne Bulls were the founding faculty for the music program at SPC. Mrs. Bulls retired in 1984 as one of the college’s original faculty members with 26 years of service. Mr. Bulls taught 21 years in the Fine Arts Department and served as department chairperson 11 years. He retired in 1980. The creation of this scholarship is a great testament to the influence of these two fine educators. As a student at South Plains College, Vickie Wilks Wisian studied music with the Bulls and they were a valuable part of her life. SPC alumnus Terry his and his wife Shari have created this scholarship endowment to support students majoring in science disciplines. Mr. Hill graduated from South Plains College in 1990 and went on to achieve significant success as a chemical distribution consultant and executive advisor. Prior to forming Apex Distribution Consulting in 2015, he guided the development and execution of commercialization strategies at Univar USA, a leading chemical distributor. Mr. Hill credits SPC and its faculty for encouraging him to excel in science and challenging him to develop a passion for learning. This scholarship program was established in 1988 by the Johnson children, in memory of their father and in honor of their mother. This scholarship honors former foreign language educators Irma Bollinger and Sherry Barsch, who were instrumental in establishing the Collaborative which hosts the South Plains Foreign Language Festival each year at SPC. This scholarship fund was established in memory of J. Murrell Brown, who operated one of the first welding shops in Levelland, Murrell?s Welding Works. The scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student enrolled in the Welding Technology Program. Minimum qualifications include: 2.50 grade point average; full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more); and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. The scholarship program was established by Mike Worley of Levelland, who got his start in the welding industry working for Brown and his associate O.M. “Rube” Morris. The J.B. Balch Memorial Scholarship is awarded to an outstanding freshman or sophomore student who majors in a science discipline. Minimum qualifications include: 3.00 grade point average; full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more); and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Students are selected for the award by the Science Department Faculty. This scholarship program was established by the widow, children and family of J.B. Balch who taught geology in the Science Department at SPC from 1966-1982, capping a 35-year teaching career. While at SPC, he was selected by his peers to receive the Excellence in Teaching Award. J.O. "Sonny" Chapman Scholarship
This scholarship has been established by Robbie and James Walker of Lubbock in honor of Mrs. Walker’s father Sonny Chapman. Mr. Chapman was an agricultural student at Texas Tech University in 1946-47 and worked his lifetime in farming. He also started his own business, Chapman’s Meat Market, in Big Spring, Texas and operated it for 25 years. Mrs. Walker served as a public school teacher and librarian in Lubbock and Levelland. Mr. Walker worked 22 years at South Plains College as dean of continuing education and workforce development and later retiring as vice president for academic affairs in 2015. The scholarship is awarded to an outstanding students enrolled in the college’s culinary arts program. First preference is given to Levelland High School graduates and second preference is Whiteface High School graduates. This scholarship honors the memory of J.P. and Judy Rose of Levelland. Mr. Rose was senior drilling superintendent for Norton Drilling Company and Mrs. Rose was a homemaker at the time of their deaths in 1998. The J.T. and Margaret Talkington Scholars program provides scholarship assistance for freshmen and sophomore students who are residents of Hockley County and Lubbock County, Texas. Minimum qualifications include: 2.50 grade point average; graduate from an accredited high school in Lubbock or Hockley County; full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more) in an associate degree program; and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. The scholarship endowment was established by a generous grant from the J.T. and Margaret Talkington Charitable Foundation. The Talkington’s were long-time business and banking leaders in the Lubbock community known for their generosity and philanthropy. They owned and operated several high-end men’s and women’s clothing stores, bringing the latest clothing fashions from international markets to the Lubbock area. The Carroll Family Scholarship was established by the James and Mary Carroll to benefit the agriculture program. Selection is made by the agriculture program faculty. Mr. Carroll taught many years for SPC in the ag program and Mrs. Carroll worked in the SPC Library. The scholarship was originally established to honor their son Jimmy Ray Carroll, who was an SPC graduate and worked for the Radian Corporation at the time of his death. This scholarship was established by James and Mildred Montgomery of Levelland to assist a student majoring in accounting. Mr. Montgomery served as a member of the SPC Board of Regents from 1996 to 2010. He owned and operated Hockley County Abstract Company for 40 years and is a past Levelland City Mayor. This scholarship fund was established by David Swaringen of Brownfield to honor the memory of his late wife Jeanette Swaringen who unexpectedly died in January 2017. Mrs. Swaringen began her career teaching kindergarten, first and second grade for the Levelland Independent School District. After acquiring a master’s degree in school counseling, she served 10 years as a counselor for Levelland Intermediate School and later for Capitol Elementary schoolchildren. The Jerry and Mary Beth Barton Scholarship is a general college scholarship that is awarded to a freshman or sophomore student who demonstrates exceptional leadership and character. Minimum qualifications include: 2.50 grade point average; full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more); and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. This scholarship honors Jerry Barton who graduated from SPC in 1961 and returned in 1969 to teach mid-management. He later served as registrar and dean of students, retiring in 1999 with 30 years of service. He died a short time later. Barton is credited with providing exemplary service to thousands of SPC students through the student services program. Mrs. Landendorff, his widow, resides in San Antonio. Faculty member Joe Carr and retired faculty member Alan Munde have established a scholarship that recognizes an outstanding student who is studying bluegrass music in the Commercial Music program. Minimum qualifications include: 2.50 grade point average; full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more); demonstrated musical talent through audition; and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Carr and Munde were the founding members of the noted Bluegrass band Country Gazette prior to joining SPC. The Joe Ed and Juanita Crawford Scholarship has been established by Mrs. Crawford in memory of her husband Joe Ed. The Crawfords owned and operated Crawford Equipment/GMC Truck/Allis Chalmers dealership for many years. The John V. and Auvena Morton Scholarship is awarded yearly to students who display leadership potential and who demonstrate self-discipline and high moral values. Recipients are generally chosen from those students who do not receive assistance from other scholarship programs at SPC. Minimum qualifications include: 3.00 grade point average; ranked in the top 50% of graduating class; full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more) in an associate degree program; and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. John Edward Jordan Memorial Scholarship
John Jordan was a sophomore diesel service technology student at SPC in his final semester of studies when he died unexpectedly in February 2013. What started as a series of impact scholarships for DST students that were provided by his parents, Kate and Mark Ehlo, turned into an endowed scholarship program through the Ehlos’ generosity. John was known by his family and his SPC instructors as being loyal, friendly, kindhearted, respectful, determined and hard working. These are the qualities the successful recipient of this scholarship will demonstrate in their studies at SPC. In order to be eligible, applicants must be diesel service technology majors in their sophomore year of the program, enroll on a full-time basis (minimum 12 semester hours) and have a minimum 2.5 grade point average. The John L. and Vergie Belle Smallwood Scholarship is one of South Plains College’s oldest active and prestigious scholarship programs. Students named Smallwood Scholars exhibit the high standards of character, leadership and scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to outstanding incoming freshmen students. Qualifications include: graduation in the upper 50% of high school class; minimum 3.00 grade point average; full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more) in an associate degree program; U.S. citizen or permanent resident; submission of ACT or SAT scores; and letter of recommendation from a school official. The Smallwoods were long-time residents and business leaders in Levelland. Having no children, they quietly helped many young people attend college. The John M. and Ruby Jo Bayne Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a freshman or sophomore student majoring in psychology or sociology. Minimum qualifications include: 2.75 grade point average; full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more) in an associate degree program; and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Students are selected for the award by faculty of the Behavioral Science Department. The scholarship fund was established by Ruby Popejoy Bayne in 1989 to honor her husband who was a community college psychology professor. The John P. Dickson Memorial Scholarship in Agriculture has been established by Mrs. Lunette Dickson in memory of her husband’s service to South Plains College. Mr. Dickson worked at SPC 31 years, joining the college in 1962 as Tax Assessor-Collector and retiring in 1993 as College Business Manager. Mr. Dickson died in 2008. Mrs. Dickson joined the College faculty in 1969 and taught business for 24 years before retiring in 1993 as chairperson of the Business Administration Department. She resides with her daughter Linda Dickson in Carrollton, Texas. The scholarship program provides financial assistance for outstanding students who are majoring in agriculture, agriculture communications or agri-business. Johnnie And Avis Keen Memorial Scholarship
The Johnnie Keen Memorial Scholarship was chartered in 2000 for the benefit of any student attending South Plains College. Minimum qualifications include: 2.50 grade point average; full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more); and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Preference is given to students who graduate from public schools in Hockley County or Whiteface CISD. Mr. Keen served on the SPC Board of Regents for 24 years during which he served as secretary of the board for a number of years before being elected chairman in 1987. He retired from the Board in May, 1994 but remained active in the community until his death in 2000. Mrs. Keen was a homemaker and she died in 2011. Johnny And Darlene Vest Memorial Scholarship
The family and friends of Johnny and Darlene Vest of Levelland have established an endowed scholarship program that assists students pursuing a career in culinary arts (first preference) or in public school teaching (second preference). Mr. Vest owned and operated JIV Service which serviced hydraulic pumps for a number of years in Levelland and later worked in the transportation department for the Levelland school district. Mrs. Vest worked 37 years in the school district’s food service. The Vests were strong supporters of public education and South Plains College. All three of their children graduated from SPC. In order to be eligible, applicants must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, enroll in a minimum of 12 semester credit hours in the culinary arts or teacher education programs and maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average. The Judy Bryant Scholarship is awarded to a freshman or sophomore student majoring in kinesiology. The scholarship program was established by the family and friends of Judy Bryant, recognizing her 43 years of service to South Plains College as a women’s basketball coach, physical education professor and departmental chairperson. The scholarship program was established by the Retha Lincoln of Levelland, Texas in honor of her daughter Kay, who was a graduate of SPC and worked as a public school counselor. The fourth president and first lady of South Plains College, Dr. Kelvin and Lissa Sharp have established an endowment fund that provides scholarships for students in the college’s agriculture program. Preference is given to students who participate in the Livestock Judging program or Collegiate Rodeo program. Minimum qualifications include: 3.00 grade point average; graduation in upper 25% of high school class; full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more) in the agriculture program; and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Dr. Sharp is credited with reviving SPC’s tradition in intercollegiate rodeo in 2001 when he served as vice president for academic affairs. The Louis G. and Dorothy Griffin Memorial Scholarship was established by Mr. Griffin’s former students and friends in 1988. Mr. Griffin served as principal at Carver School in Levelland for 31 years and was an educational leader for the African-American community. Following his retirement, he served on the Levelland ISD Board of Trustees and other civic boards and agencies. Mr. Griffin supported SPC and education through his advocacy of learning, passion for helping others and his belief that all persons have the freedom to think, speak and pursue their dreams. He died in 1989. The Lena Ethel Roettig Scholarship Award in English was established by Mrs. Pauline Winningham in 1982 in memory of her mother who stressed the importance of a college education at a time when many women did not attend college. As a result, the scholarship award recognizes an outstanding SPC student who plans to teach English language arts in a public school setting. The Leona Lincoln Goyette Scholarship is awarded to a freshman or sophomore student who enrolls full-time in the College’s teacher education program. Minimum qualification include: 3.00 grade point average, full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more) in the teacher education program; and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Ms. Goyette was a public school teacher and the endowed scholarship program in her name was established by her mother, Retha Lincoln of Levelland, Texas. Mrs. Linclon established seven endowed scholarship programs in honor of her husband and five daughters. The Lincolns moved to Hockley County in 1931 and farmed in the Sundown area until they moved to Levelland in 1940. Z.O. This scholarship was established by the family of Lynn C. Ivy who worked in many phases of the oil industry. Dr. Don Kennedy donated several precious works of art to the College over a period of years. A successful dentist for forty years, Dr. Kennedy began his practice in Levelland in 1958. He was an active community member and well-respected among his peers in the dental profession. This endowment was established by his godson, Richard Ellis and his wife, Carrie. The M.S. and Meek Lane Doss Endowed Opportunity Scholarship is a general college scholarship that affords students the opportunity to begin their college education at SPC. Minimum qualifications include: 2.50 grade point average; full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more); and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Students who reside in West Texas or Eastern New Mexico are eligible to apply for scholarship funds. This scholarship program has been made possible through generous grants from the M.S. The Marvin and Mildred Baker Presidential Scholarship is awarded to a freshman or sophomore student majoring in commercial music. Minimum qualifications include: 2.50 grade point average; full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more) in the program; and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. This scholarship program honors the second president and first-lady of South Plains College, who served the college from 1961 to his retirement in 1994. Much of the college’s early growth and expansion into a multi-location community college was the result of Dr. Baker?s leadership. While president, he helped pioneer the College’s unique program in country and bluegrass music. From 1977 to 1994, Dr. Baker was involved in the college’s annual summer country music road shows. The Mary Jane Frescaz Memorial Scholarship was established by the family and friends of Mrs. Frescaz who died December 2013. Mrs. Frescaz grew up in Levelland and worked as an office manager for Allied Oilfield Services. Her husband Manuel Frescaz initiated the scholarship program in 2014. Mrs. Frescaz had a love for literature and reading. The Max Evans Wesrtern Swing Scholarships is awarded to a talented student performer who is majoring in commercial music and studying this music style. Minimum qualifications include: 2.50 grade point average; full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more); demonstrated musical talent through audition; and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. The scholarship was established by the friends of Max Evans, a Ropesville, Texas, native who has enjoyed a notable career as a movie screen writer, author and working cowboy. Mr. Evans is best know for his screenplay for the 1956 movie “The Rounders,” staring Glenn Ford and Henry Fonda, and 1998 film “The Hi-Lo Country,” starring Woody Harrelson and Patricia Arquette. The Max Neal Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a freshman or sophomore student enrolled in the Welding Technology program. The Nathan Tubb Memorial Scholarship in Commercial Music is awarded to a freshman or sophomore student majoring in commercial music. Nathan Tubb touched many lives during his time at South Plains College. Dean Tubb, who served as the college’s first Registrar and retired from the college in 1981 as Academic Vice President, is credited with pioneering the commercial music program at SPC. The Neal Family Scholarship has been established by Dewey and Louise Neal of Wichita, Kansas, and Christopher and LuAnn Neal of Lubbock, Texas to benefit a student in the sound technology program. The vision of SPC’s Directory of the Physical Fitness Center Dee Dee Odorizzi, this endowment was established from the proceeds of the Cotton Country Sprint Triathlon. Raymond "Duke" And Audie Sonnenburg Scholarship
Established by Mrs. Audie Sonnenburg of Lubbock, Texas and her son Guy Thomas of Nacogdoches, Texas, this scholarship assists students who major in one of the following fields of study: business administration, computer information systems or industrial technology programs. First consideration is given to female applicants in honor of her daughter Teresa Thomas Etchison who died in 2012. In order to qualify, applicants must have and maintain a minimum 3.0 grade point average and enroll full-time (minimum 12 semester hours) in one of the approved programs. Academic performance is a primary consideration in awarding this scholarship. Consideration is also given to students who are from Olton, Texas where Mrs. Sonnenburg grew up and raised a family with her first husband Jack Thomas, who died in a fatal fire. The Sonnenburg family moved to Levelland in 1980 where Mr. Sonnenburg taught distributive education and trades at Levelland High School and helped establish the Hockley County School Employees Credit Union. Redd And Darlene Stewart Memorial Scholarship
The Redd and Darlene Steward Memorial Scholarship is awarded to commercial music student who exhibits outstanding talent in the area of bluegrass music. Minimum qualifications include: 2.50 grade point average; full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more); and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. As a country music songwriter and Grand Ole Opry performer, Redd Stewart was best known as the composer of such classic songs as The Tennessee Waltz, Bonaparte’s Retreat and You Belong to Me. The Stewards established this scholarship program for a bluegrass music student in 1991. Mr. Stewart was a guest lecturer and performed on the SPC stage on a number of occasions. The scholarship was endowed by a generous bequest that was received in 2004. Redd Steward died in 2003 and Mrs. Steward died shortly thereafter. more...

Retha Lincoln Memorial Scholarship In Biology
The Retha Lincoln Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a freshman or sophomore student who plans to major in biology at the College. Minimum qualification include: 3.00 grade point average, full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more) as a history major; and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Mrs. Lincoln was a long-time member of the Rose Garden Club in Levelland and enjoyed gardening and horticulture. Richard James Scholarship In Mathematics
Richard James taught mathematics at South Plains College for 43 years before retiring as a professor of mathematics in 2010. Colleagues and former students established the scholarship fund to recognize his service and impact as a master teacher. In order to be eligible, applicants must be enrolled or plan to enroll full-time as a mathematics or pre-engineering major. Recipients are selected by the faculty of the Mathematics and Pre-Engineering Department based on academic performance, character and leadership. Richie Mcdonald Scholarship In Sound Technology
The Richie McDonald Scholarship is awarded to an outstanding freshman or sophomore student enrolled in the Sound Technology Program. Minimum qualifications include: 2.50 grade point average; full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more) in the business program; and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. This scholarship program was established by Elroy and Vickie Wisian to honor Lubbock native and former SPC student Richie McDonald. McDonald studied sound technology at SPC and later performed and recorded as the lead vocalist for the country music group Lonestar. Robert And Joy Pearce Mathematics Scholarship
The Robert and Joy Pearce Mathematics Scholarship is awarded to a freshman or sophomore math major. Minimum qualification include: 3.0 grade point average; full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more) in the math program; and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Mr. Pearce, retired professor of mathematics and department chairperson, holds many distinctions at South Plains College. But the one he is most known for is his commitment to helping math and pre-engineering students be successful in all their college endeavors. Mr. Pearce exemplified this credo for 40 years at SPC. He and his wife Joy endowed the Robert and Joy Pearce Scholarship in Mathematics. The Robert Smotherman Memorial Scholarship is a general college scholarship that is awarded to an incoming freshman student. First consideration is given to students who are graduates of Whiteface High School. Minimum qualifications include: 2.50 grade point average; full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more); and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Rodney Collins Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship program was established by the friends, co-workers and family of Rodney Collins who worked at the Lubbock County Court Residential Treatment Center at the time of his death in 2006. SPC provides the educational program at the center and faculty members there organized a number of fundraising events to endow the program. Mr. Collins worked with residents in recovery and was known for his compassion and commitment. The Roland Martin Memorial Scholarship was established by the Martin family to benefit a graduate of Sundown High School who chooses to attend South Plains College. The Rusty Price Memorial Scholarship is a general college scholarship that is awarded to a freshman or sophomore student. This scholarship was established by the late Billy and Nancy Price Family of Levelland in memory of their son and brother, Rusty. Samuel Montez Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established by the youth of St. Michael Catholic Church and the family and friends of Samuel Montez, Sr. Mr. Montez, who worked at SPC in the 1970s as a custodian, was an active adult leader of the church’s youth program for many years prior to his death in 2001. Five of the Montez’s 14 children have attended SPC. The scholarship is awarded to an SPC student who is a member of St. Michael Catholic Church in Levelland and who has been involved in the church’s youth program. This scholarship was established to honor the former members of the SPC Block and Bridle Club who also were a part of the South Plains College Livestock Judging Team. The scholarship is awarded to an outstanding member of the Livestock Judging Team. First preference is given to a sophomore student on the team. The Tiny Moore Memorial Scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student performer in the Commercial Music program. This scholarship honors the memory of Billie “Tiny” Moore who was a long-time member of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys and also performed with Merle Haggard and Moon Mullican. Tom T. And Dixie Hall Scholarship
Country music legend and storyteller Tom T. Hall has been associated with the SPC commercial music program since 1979 when he brought a Nashville film crew to Levelland to produce a mini-documentary on the country and bluegrass music program. In 1987, SPC celebrated Tom T. Hall Day and the opening of the Tom T. Hall Production Center. Proceeds from a benefit concert featuring Hall and SPC faculty resulted in the Tom T. and Dixie Hall Scholarship. Wilburn and Helen Wheeler had a long association with South Plains College.
