Archaeology - Dr. Susan M. Hector Scholarship
The San Diego City College anthropology department’s archaeology program has given new and returning students the opportunity to engage in a profession that contributes knowledge about changes in human culture and behavior over time and across locations. Biology - Robert L. Strecker
Bob Strecker came to San Diego City College in 1967 after teaching zoology at Miami University (Ohio). At City, he was the resident zoologist, but taught a variety of courses and cofounded the Life Science Department’s highly-valued tradition of team teaching. He retired in 1987 to be with his children and grandchildren in Massachusetts.
Bob was a born scientist (the natural world fascinated him) and his invitation to write an article for Scientific American was an accomplishment unequaled by any other San Diego Community College District professor of his era. He was also a natural teacher. He shared his passion for science with his students and interacted with them in his easy-going, supportive manner, using language appropriate to their educational level. Bob also influenced the professional development of his younger colleagues as a mentor and friend. Many of those lessons have been passed down through the decades to the current Biology faculty, where his impact is still felt.
In addition to teaching, Bob loved poetry, the arts, gardening, children, and sampling food off his peers’ plates. And, he was a man of peace. He was known by many students and faculty alike as “Uncle Bob,” a moniker he wore with pride and good humor. He passed away in 2015 and his loss is felt deeply by those who knew him.
The scholarship will be awarded to Biology majors who manifest Bob’s qualities of classroom excellence and inquisitiveness about the natural world.

Glov Scholarship Fund
This scholarship in in honor of Delia “Gloria” Vasquez, an educator and graduate of San Diego City College. As a teacher, Gloria helped hundreds of her students explore new horizons and reach their potential in life. With this exploration, new seeds of possibilities were planted, resulting in many of her students pursuing and completing their college education.
There were many challenges for Gloria in her pursuit of becoming an educator. Not the least of which was that as an adult, Gloria only possessed a ninth grade education. Growing up poor, with neither a mother nor father to support her, education was not a priority. Education took a back seat to helping put food on the table for her family.
Many years later after raising her own family, Gloria decided to pursue her calling of becoming a teacher. In doing so, Gloria became a successful by product of the San Diego college system. She started at San Diego City College where she received her Associate of Arts degree in the late 1970s. Soon afterwards, Gloria enrolled and completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from San Diego State University. She parlayed her education degree into a career fulfilling more than 30 years as a primary school teacher for the San Diego Unified School District. It was also during this time Gloria continued her educational knowledge by receiving a Master of Arts degree from Alliant International University in San Diego (formerly known as United States International University).
One of Gloria’s greatest strengths as a teacher was her desire and commitment to actively expose her students to various adventures and experiences outside their normal settings. She accomplished this by utilizing her own resources and time to hold various extracurricular activities. Her students enjoyed several BBQ outings at Gloria’s home, camping trips to the local mountains, and watching (and tailgating at) San Diego Padres games, just to name a few. These outside activities help raise her students’ awareness about the endless possibilities beyond their home environment.
To continue with this commitment, and to honor Gloria’s lifetime accomplishments as an educator, this scholarship has been established with the primary goal of helping motivated individuals seek and explore new adventures as college students.

Linsky Family Scholarship
The Linksy Family had maintained a multi-generational commitment to education, civic engagement, and democratic governance. A scholarship dedicated to students in the Social Sciences is essential to this commitment as we move through the 21st century.
Lila and Morrie Linsky were members of the “Greatest Generation” which lived through both The Great Depression and the Second World War and ultimately shared in the blessings and prosperity of post-war America. They impressed upon their children the need to give back to the society which had provided so many opportunities and rewards. This charge was taken seriously by that second generation and passed down to yet a third which understands the value of commitment and dedication to ideals beyond the self. It is in that spirit – and with the certain knowledge that the futures rest in the hand of educated young men and women – that the Linsky Family has established this scholarship tailored specifically for those pursuing a degree in the Social Sciences.
