Williston State College was founded in 1957 as Williston Community College. It became a four-year institution in 1965 and was renamed Williston State College. In 1975, the college became part of the North Dakota University System.

The college has an enrollment of about 1,200 students. The campus covers 50 acres (20 ha) of land. The college is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
