Western Texas College was established in 1965 as Western Junior College. The college was originally located in the city of Lamesa, Texas. In its early years, the college served students in the western portion of the state. In the late 1960s, the college began to expand its academic programs and facilities. In the early 1970s, the college moved to its current location in Snyder.

The college has undergone several name changes over the years. In the early 1990s, the college was renamed Western Texas State Technical College. In 1998, the college was renamed Western Texas College.
