Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute (SIPI) is a public two-year technical college located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States, serving the American Indian Tribes of the Southwest. It is one of 37 tribal colleges and universities in the United States. SIPI is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and offers Associate of Applied Science degrees and certificates in a variety of programs. The majority of SIPI's students are Native American, but the school also serves a small number of non-native students each year.
SIPI was founded in 1971 as a vocational school to serve the needs of the American Indian Tribes of the Southwest. The school's founding was the result of a long process of consultation and negotiation between the US Department of the Interior, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and the Indian tribes of the region. The school opened its doors in 1973 with just over 100 students enrolled.
Since its founding, SIPI has grown steadily in size and scope. The school now offers a wide range of Associate's degree and certificate programs in fields such as Business, Information Technology, Engineering, and Health Sciences. SIPI also offers a number of unique programs that are specific to the needs of the American Indian community, such as Tribal Management and Language and Culture revitalization.
SIPI is fully accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the American Indian Higher Education Consortium. The school has an active partnership with the nearby University of New Mexico, which provides SIPI students with access to a wide range of resources and opportunities.
SIPI is proud of its status as a tribal college and of its commitment to serving the American Indian community. The school's mission is to "provide quality higher education and training opportunities for American Indian and Alaska Native students that prepare them for personal success, leadership, and service to their communities and tribes."
